    What do you feed them?

Just wondering what people are feeding their pets...

Lately My future hub and I have been discussing.. what to feed the dog we are currently feeding her what the breeder was feeding her...

But... we are also seeming to read that we should be supplementing her food.. and that perhaps manufactured dog foods aren't really that healthy??

I'm feeding California Natural Reduced Calorie Lamb and Rice. My Goldens and my Lab love it. Food is a personal thing, but I have found that this is affordable, and works well with my dogs. Best of luck to you in your decision!

I've fed my dogs Science Diet for about 20 years. My husky lived to be 12, my beagle is chugging right along toward 16, and my other dogs love it. They maintain overall great health and I rarely have to take them to vet for anything but vaccinations. In smaller bags it's as expensive as any other premium food, but I buy the 44 pound bag and it's considerably cheaper. I've been very pleased how Science Diet grows and maintains dogs.

Right now we are feeding our dogs Iams Adult. We were feeding Pedigree Less Active to our older dogs, Iams Puppy to our puppy, and Iams Large Breed Puppy to the foster puppy. The foster puppy has gone to forever home, and our puppy is fully grown. We changed to Iams Adult only because it is easier to find.

When my dogs were pups, I fed them Nutro puppy food
    for large breeds.
The food they eat now is Canidae, which
is a human grade dog kibble. (I also mix healthy people food
    with their kibble.)
Learn to read the first few ingredients on the dog
food bag, the first 3, I believe are the most important.
So you want to make sure the first ingredients are
the most valuable. I am sure their are many good
qualtiy dog foods out their. Each dog is different,
iIF your dog looks and is healthy on the dog food it's eating,
than I would stick to that food.

I just switched Shiloh over to one of the Super Premium dog foods that have been recommended by the Whole Dog Journal since 1998.

Shiloh is served Wellness Super 5 Mix Lamb. (A bit pricey, but worth it.) She LOVES it.
Killian eats home cooked (soft), but I like to add a little kibble in his food for something crunchy for his teeth. He dines on home-cooked plus a bit of Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato (also pricey). He actually LIKES it. He only get a little of it, though. Shiloh has also tasted it and likes it, too!

Ingredients are great. Human quality. Here's the website:

my dogs are all on the BARF diet, and all 5 are extremly healthy, their teeth are pearly white, zippo tarter whatsoever, NEVER had a problem with ear wax, as in no ear wax at all. their coats are stunning, they went from fat to muscular, from lazy to a puppy, aging prematurly to actng like a puppy again, arthritis to none, etc........ etc.......etc... I could go on forever with all the changes we have had since the swich the way I see it, we dont eat commercial foods every day all our meals, and the same food too, for our whole life so why should we do this to our dogs??????????? cost depends on your shopping skills, some people find it really expensive but my mom has really good shopping skills, she called, and looked around, and found a butcher shop that lets us have as many bones as we want for free, and they are completly fresh, as for age, you can start the pups at any age, misty started at only 7 weeks old, when we got her the bones are great for teething puppys, they give them releif, nice clean teeth, and neutrients they cant get anywhere else shadow started when she was 4 years old, happy was about 7 months I think, Ripley, 8 months, and perky 1 year. at blu's age I would give mostly poultry, and lots of plain yogurt, not much vegies yet and 3 meals a day, the 1 meal should alternate between a bone, and yogurt/organ meats mix, and one meal a bone, and 1 meal a yogurt/organ meat/a little vegie slop mix. I know lotes about puppys that age at th emoment cuz misty would be about the same age as blu maybe a week younger or so that help with your compiling info on BARF?

Right now I've got my dogs on Sensible Choice Lamb & Rice. I supplement it with enzymes and both Norbert and Joxer get MSM.

Sarah, Shiloh is fed the dry kibble Wellness brand by Old Mother Hubbard. The product is Super 5 Mix Lamb. She really loves it!! (but Shiloh has no problem with eating, anyway. hahaha)

I feed my two standard poodles Science Diet lamb and Rice and my minature poodle gets Hills prescription diet L/D as she is old and has liver disease. I have been feeding S/D for 10yrs and like the way all my dogs have done on it. I also supplement with sweet potatos, Green beans, Carrots and give brewers yeast with garlic. Their Coats are great and maintain well.
