    Carpet Odor

There are several products on the market designed to
eliminate doggy odor from carpets. The main
    ingredient in
these products is baking soda. Aromatics are added.
    While
the added aroma smells okay at first, after several
    uses
that scent may become offensive also. Not to mention
    that
your dog's nose is right down there in it. Using
    plain
baking soda, or a mix of baking soda and cornstarch,
    works
just as well without the added scents or the added
    cost.
Just sprinkle it on the carpet, let sit for a few
    minutes,
and vacuum. The baking soda will also deodorize the
    exhaust
from the vacuum without perfuming it.

This is a good idea:Cleaner Carpet

There's vacuuming and then there's vacuuming. If you
    just
run the vacuum over the surface of the carpet
    quickly, it
will only pick up dirt on the surface. Finer
    particles work
their way down to the carpet backing and build up,
providing the ideal environment for flea eggs to
    hatch and
thrive and allowing the carpet to just keep getting
    dirtier.

Vacuum in slow motion--really, really slow motion.
    This
gives the machine the chance to pull dirt to the
    surface.
Vacuum in several directions wherever possible. Pay
    special
attention to traffic areas, dog sleeping areas, and
    places
where your dog jumps down off of furniture.

Vacuum slowly...that is the same advice given to me by my Electrolux salesman. Biggest mistake people make in vacuuming is going too fast.

Remember our vacuum cleaner discussions from a while back?

I've had good results with white vinegar. Soak up any wet spots, pour on vinegar, wait a few minutes and soak up as much as you can. Test in a corner first.

A good commercial product is Outright. It has enzymes that actually destroy the odor causing bacteria. There are a couple of other similar products, all work the same way. It may take a while to get all of the smell out of the carpet, but the enzymes do the trick.

I had a dog wet the back seat of my car in gallons. I tried everything I could think of to rid the car of the urine smell. I even baked the seat in the sun for a week. I finally poured Outright on it and made sure it soaked in good. After another week, the seat was dry and I could drive the car again. And I still have the car, but not the dog!
