Around and around we go :)

My new little pupster, Ripley, is my first male dog in years and years. I have been noticing the subtle differences between him and the females that I am accustomed to. One cute thing that I have noticed in particular is the way he must go around and around in a circle before sitting down. I remember my last male, Pumpkin (RB) also did this, but I really can't ever remember seeing any of my 'girls' do it. Is this just a male thing?

i really have no idea but mickey does this too. i don't really remember my mom's (female) dog ever doing this though. maybe it is

Malone does this when he is getting ready to fall asleep. He scratches [his bed or the floor or whatever], turns in a circle, scratches somemore, turns in a couple of more circles, and then flops down. Sometimes he will do this 3 or 4 times before FINALLY getting comfortable.

My Sheba does that circle thing
Sheba even does it when she goes to the bathroom
to find that perfect spot. hehehe
Rocky will usually just plop right down.
Sheba and Pepper both move their rug or blanket
    around too.

Ripley just did this too - the scratching part! He is now on the floor at my feet dozing off, but before doing so he turned and turned and scratched at the floor and turned some more! LOL! Too funny! My other male, Pumpkin, used to scratch at the covers on the bed and actually turned down the covers at times! This was quite a feat for him too because he was a toy poodle and weighed less than 10 lbs. but he was persistent!

All 3 of my dogs do this. I've never had a female dog though, so I don't know if it's just a "male" thing.

turning around is instinctive...they get it from wolves that have to watch out for rocks and stuff when they lay down..but i have never seen my female dogs do it lol....so maybe just the males? i dunno, i watched it on the discovery channel when they talked about them turning around in circles but they never said anything about only males doing it...hmmm gives u something to think about eh? lol

Smudge does the turning thing, that is after he bunches the covers up with his head. He'll usually go around a couple of times and then just plop down, occasionally getting up again just to repeat the process. Winter on the other hand just does a very unlady like plop and stretch. While Tama usually just lies down. Occasionally he'll turn around a couple of times but not often.

Thanks Amy for the great sig!

thought i would add something else: my grandma has a shitzu, Tia. whenever tia decides she wants to take a poo, she will turn around and around and it seems like it never ends lol...i remember one time we took her for a walk, and we counted, and it took her 23 times before she finally just went to the bathroom lol...then she looked all proud of herself...funny little strangling dog...anyone else seen something like this?

Kito goes around in circles all the time--before he lays down (a million times on the bed)--then he moves and has to start all over, he does it when he goes potty (before, to find the right spot), and he chases his tail like a crazy dog!!! Abbey just plops down wherever--it must be a male thing--I never thought of it that way.

Reggie takes FOREVER to find that "perfect spot" to crap, lol. He's totally like that...turning in circles, sniffing every spot. But man, if you take him for a walk, he'll go 5 times before you get around the block!

lol..my dog timber drives me nuts cuz we rarely walk, we usually bike (well i bike she runs lol) and the whole time i bike i have to watch her every movement to make sure she doesnt have to take a crap cuz there have been a couple times where i took my eyes off of her for a few and she decided she needed to go. and i remember one time, when we were biking down a sidewalk, and i was looking at a big group of guys under a tree (luckily i wasnt able to see if they were hot) and timber stopped to go, and i went flying (FLYING!!!) over the handlebars! the leash was wrapped around my wrist and i tried to get it off before i fell but i only managed to get everything out but my fingers, so i cut my finger (somehow...the leash isnt sharp lol ???) and poor timber went flying foward when i jerked the leash forward...and the guys were laughing!!! it was sooo embarassing...so i said "Timber!!" really loudly so that they would know that im not an idiot who falls off my bike all the time lol

Dixie is my circle forever before laying down or taking a poop dog. Dusty just plops down. He occassionally circles when he takes a poop. I guess this blows the theory it is a male thing.
