Don't you hate it when the cafeteria line is so long?

...Oh, and bird experts out there...cansomeone tell me what these are? They came in a big flock, ate all the seed, then flew off

They could be a flock of Starlings. We had a bunch of them come through here not long ago and our parakeet went crazy trying to talk to all of them! He really misses all the summertime birds and having the screen door open so he can talk to the wild birds.

Black with speckled backs? Medium size? They're definitely starlings. We get mostly juncos, sometimes a pheasant, and a smattering of sparrows and chickadees. We just scatter birdseed on top of the snow in the back yard, and we do sometimes get cardinals, but the juncos are the most faithful - and the squirrels, of course!

I don't think they are starlings--although I don't know if starlings have different variety - I've seen starlings before and they are bigger than these -- they were small, round and compact in size, almost a solid charcoal grey color (some had a tinge of brown around the face) - with little short black beaks, they looked a lot like the little snowbirds, only without the little white tummies.

They almost had a finch-like quality.

The cardinals and bluejays are pretty prevalent around here. Cardinals are our state bird...I've read they mate for life and never leave their 'home' area. We have about 3 nesting pair in our back yard, although that day we counted 6 male and 6 female in the tree.....I'm thinking that first picture will make a nice Christmas card for next season.

Thanks for all the nice compliments.

    Beautiful pictures.

  14. We have a bird feeder (aka Edwina's Entertainment Center.) The bare trunk of a yew is next to it. This makes a nice perch for the birds and squirrels ( ) who feed there.

    Picture from last summer....

Sunday night my husband called me over to the door...two raccoons were on the branch. Pushing and shoving each other, falling off and climbing back on. I retrieved a flashlight to see them better. Both turned to me with those masked face looking as if..."Do you mind?????? A little privacy!! We are trying to eat here!!"

It is so cold the birds need to be fed. But I'm doing it in the morning now so the raccoons don't get it all!

Awwwww pretty birdies! The cardinal is BEAUTIFUL! I just LOVE watching wild birds feed outside. Popcorn and Muffin do too, but they freak out when they see a bird bigger than them! They like to talk to the starlings and doves.
