    New monkey coming home soon

Next weekend I'm going to pick up my newest family member!

I am getting a 1 and a half year old male rhesus. Friendly, likes small dogs and cats. Wears diapers and likes to take baths!

His owners have no longer anytime for him and he is so sweet I knew I couldn't pass him up dispite my extreme fondness for capuchins hehe.

Orginally we were getting a squirrel monkey but happily his owner decided to keep him

1.I live in Connecticut, USA on a ranch so my dog and my monkids have a lot of room to roam AND so I can keep my horses on my proporty.

2.I got Abby and Aaron for a breeder I found. I go to something called "Monkey Get Together" where all these people bring their monkeys. That's where I met the women who was giving away her rhesus.

3.It costs $3.00 a day to keep a monkey. Plus the cage (actually you can buy one second hand for cheaper) plus the monkey itself and more often or not you have to specially order their food (most pet stores do not carry it).

But otherwise they are very sweet lil kids! You should see them when they take a bath!

This is probably a dumb question ... but I have to ask.

Is it not possible to housetrain a monkey?

You said the new monkey you are getting wears diapers? Is that because it can't be housebroken, or does it have a medical problem of some sort?

I have just always assumed, knowing nothing about monkeys, that they were housetrained like a dog or a cat? I have always heard monkeys are very intelligent, so I assumed they would easily housetrain.

    Not true?

    Just curious.

    Answer to your question twisterdog:

Some not all monkeys can be houstrained (but believe me it isn't easy!) If you do manage to train them they will quickly ignore this training when they become older. All my monkeys wear cloth diapers which are reusable and saves money.

Wow. You are WAY more patient than I am!

I could NEVER handle that ... I could barely handle that with my human child!

I wonder why they can't be housetrained? Strange.

Good luck with your new monkey!

Sorry to be a pest, but I have another question .....

Do they lay there quietly and let you change their diapers? Or is a battle?

    Just curious ....

Don't worry I love to answer questions people have about monkeys.

Well it difers from monkey to monkey whether they will be good about changing diapers or being bad about it. Aaron is generally very good about getting his diaper changed but Abigail is an absolute monster! She screeches and scratches and twich bit me.

I still love her to death

    Tell us more.

Do you teach the monkeys to do things such as ......feed themselves, play with toys, etc. How do you control them in the house? Do they run around and play? What do they eat?

Wow! Many people I've met online think monkeys are the stupidest things to have for a pet (Only I don't think of mine as pets...they are my monkeykids!)

You don't really teach those behaviours...they do it themselves. I have taught them to do highfive and when I say "Are you hungry" they rub their tummies.

Sometimes they are allowed to roam free like at night when they play on our bed. Mostly I put them on leashes which helps control them. Sometimes I let them run around and play with each other which is good for them.

They eat a commercial primate diet along with fresh fruits and veggies and sweet potato. They also like mealworms as a treat. Sometimes in the morning we go down to McDonolds and they share a biscuit with egg and bacon with me.
