    Hello Mac people!

I am upgrading my mom's iMac G3 600 with OS 10.5.6 (this may not work, as the max is supposed to be 10.4.11) and am installing it on the OSX folder.

The fellow who first set this up added OS9 to it. I am not sure what purpose this has.

However, the install process did not give me an option to delete it.

Do I need this OS 9? How do I get rid of it? Click and then delete?

    Thanks for any advice!

I believe there are two reasons for the OS 9 folder.

    1) Older Macs could start up either into OS X or the older OS 9.

    2) The older versions of OS X also had a "classic" mode that allowed older programs to run in OS X using part of the old system software. I believe that the OS 9 folder is required for these programs to run in classic mode. These programs will not work without this folder.

To remove OS 9 you could just delete its folder. Compared to the size of OS X, I don't think OS 9 takes up much room.

    Candace,

Paul is correct - OS9 needs to be present to run older versions of software used on the Mac. It may be best to leave OS9 there until you are certain it is no longer necessary depending on what you Mom wants to keep or not. I did the same with my previous Mac and over time converted files so that I no longer needed OS9.

    Hope that helps, Betty
