Alani Has To Go To The Vet: Update 7/14/11 11:08pm

I noticed last night that Alani was straining while using the litter box and I thought he was maybe just a bit constipated. I was wrong he was only peeing in small amounts. I've been through this before with some of my cats so I tried not to panic. I decided to watch him and although he's eating well and acting pretty much normal he's still jumping into the litter box a lot more than usual and only peeing in very small amounts.

My vet is always booked so I called and left a voice mail with her around 1pm and her assistant called me back a little before 2pm. She's able to squeeze me in today at 3pm. I hope that it's nothing too serious. He and Blaze have been eating Chicken Soup For The Cat Lovers Soul in the Light Formula because they both need extra fiber due to having very sensitive tummies. It does have rice and few other grains like oats and barley which I'm not crazy about but they just didn't do well on grain free foods. I also had to stop giving them any canned food because they would get diarrhea and it would get all stuck to their fluffy bottoms. I know it's not a good idea to feed cats only dry food so this is most likely why Alani is having problems. I feel like a very bad kitty mom right now.

Has any one tried adding Metamucil to their cats diet? I'm going to ask my vet about this so that hopefully I can add it to their canned food and they'll then be okay with it. Please send Alani some good vibes. I'll update you about him later today. Thanks in advance.

Since it is 5 PM here, took me moment to figure out. Wow your vet has Sunday hours, lucky you and lucky Alani.

Prayers for recovery for Alani, he can't feel 100% with this.

Don't know about Metamucil, but a bit of canned pumpkin works.

Prayers and healing energies for Alani, that all will soon be well.

Yes, my vet works from Sun.-Wed. and the vet hospital is also an emergency hospital so it's always open. My vet does surgeries on Mondays but she said that she's been having neck problems lately so she's stopped doing surgeries all day on Mon. so she can see some patients.

Well Alani was a very good boy and he hardly cried at all in the car. He only weighs 12.13lbs which is less than I thought he weighed. He feels so solid to me. I guess he looks so large because of all of his fluff. His bladder was very small and empty of course so my vet couldn't get a urine sample. She said she didn't think that he had crystals because she didn't feel anything gritty on his pee pee area and that his penis was pink like it should be and not purple.

She thinks he may be a bit irritated so he was given some sub-q fluids to help to flush him out and some buprenex for pain. If he's still not doing well then he needs to see her again either on Mon. or Tues. I always line my cat carriers with the puppy pee pee pads in case of accidents/car sickness etc. When I got home, Alani had peed on the pee pad and it was bloody. I called and left another voice mail message for my vet but I haven't heard anything back yet. I tried to look at his pee pee area again and it doesn't even look red or sore or even bloody. He also peed a little in the litter box and it didn't look bloody either. I'm very confused about all of this.

I asked my vet about Metamucil and she said it would make things worse and that it's for constipation. I read online that it can be used for both but I won't try it without her approval. She told me to try to give Alani and Blaze a little canned food mixed mostly with water and that this should help. This would also help to give Alani more needed water. I sure hope this works. More positive vibes are needed. Thanks.

I just called back again and Alani wasn't even given any buprinex. I was supposed to pick it up at their pharmacy. I talked to my vet's assistant and he said to just monitor Alani and to call him back tomorrow morning to let him know how Alani is doing. He said it sounds like he's just irritated from straining so the blood should be a one time thing. I just need to make sure he continues to eat, drink, and pee. Luckily I'm off Mon. & Tues. so I can monitor him closely and if needed I can bring him back in any time too.

Oh that sounds scary. I hope that it is just a one time thing- but it's good that you are close and can monitor things.
All the best for not-so-little Alani.

    Whoa, I'm just seeing this....sorry.

I hope Alani gets to feeling better real soon. It's no fun for us or the "baby" when they are sick. Good thing you have today and tomorrow off work too.

    Get better Alani!!
Our goal in life should be - to be as good a person as our dog thinks we are.

I hope Alani feels better soon. It's no fun having bladder issues for cats or humans.

I'll continue my prayers for Alani and for you as well.
