    Christofur: MASSIVE seizure episode

About 5:00 this morning I was awakened by noise coming from the bathroom. Sure enough it was little Christofur having another seizure.

I let him ride that one out and start relaxing. He didn't really relax, and about 5:15 he was going again. I started thinking about the emergency vet. He had yet another one, and off we went. Got there just after 6am.

They set him up with Valium drip and phenobarbital and all, and he still kept seizing for a while; finally got it stopped. They said they need to hospitalize and monitor him all day. (This will run me some $650-$800 or so.)

The vet suggested it might be best for him just to be PTS.. he's already very limited, not going to get any better, likely to be worse off after this. A lot of very demanding and expensive care could be ahead. And something like this could happen again any time.

I was about to have them put him down, but I felt so bad. I held him in my lap and stroked him, he was dozing peacefully and I thought I could hear a soft purr from time to time.

I said, he's not suffering (when not seizing), enjoys his food, seems happy and enjoys life in spite of his limitations. Can we see if he at least get back to that level? (I don't know if that would be good, as we still don't have his potty routine worked out, so he usually does wind up lying in some pee.)

I finally asked if they would monitor him today and see if he can be stabillized and how he's doing, so that's what's happening now. I met the day vet, and she will keep me posted on him today. I wonder if, depending on how it goes, if not well, it might still be best just to let him go gently.

I couldn't go through another round of cluster-seizures like that again, and I wouldn't want to have him go through that again either.

Just wanted to let you folks know and ask for your thoughts on it all. Thank you.

Oh, Pat. I'm so sorry to hear this. Poor kitty, he sure was dealt a bad deck.

I know you'll make the right decision. I think it's good that he's spending the day at the Vet. They can give you a much better idea of what's going on.

I know what you mean about not going through another episode like this morning. One thing to keep in mind - will you feel comfortable leaving the house from now on, for any length of time?

{{{{hugs}}}} Prayers that whatever decision you make will be dictated by Christofur...this kind of decision is even worse when it is due to something that is not the fault of such a young and handsome kitten.

It's the spirit and personality he has shown that shows WHO he is...that makes things more difficult also.

Prayers to the Creator to help Christofur...a miracle, however small, would be wonderful. This dear boy doesn't deserve the hand he was dealt.

Thank you, dear friends. No word from the hospital yet.

I'm so glad we're at least hanging on for now!

Gretchen, that's something that came to my mind too.. if he were to have another series of these "cluster" seizures when I wasn't home.

Thank you, Barbara and Jenn and Katladyd, for your prayers and good wishes. Christofur and I really appreciate them.

I called the hospital about 6:30pm. He's doing okay, hasn't seized again and is resting up. They want to observe him for 24 hours, which will go to tomorrow morning. I hope I'll be able to bring him home after that.

    Thanks again, everyone.

I'm so sorry about this, Pat. When my dog Charmin had seizures, if I softly called her name close to her ear, she would come out of the seizure but she hardly had any after we got the phenolbarbitol dosage worked out. Grace is right, though; what could happen if he had the seizures while you were gone? Scary to think about but definitely something to consider. I do hope that the medication can stop the seizures. He may be limited but if the seizures stop, he could have a happy, secure life w/you. Many prayers going up for Christofur and you right now. Keep the faythe.
    Blessings,
    Mary

Pat, I'm so sorry to hear this. Hopefully he'll remain stable now and you'll be able to bring him home. Maybe he can be put on some medication for the seizures like Mary said. Lots of prayers and positive thoughts are being sent his way.

Oh gosh, how sad, and how scary. Seizures are so hard to watch, and you feel so helpless.

MANY prayers said for dear little Christofur. I wish him all the best.
