    Dasher is sick

Hi, my name is Jordan. I think my dog dasher has hip displasia. My parents and i are going to get him checked out on tuesday, anyway if he does have hip displasia we dont have the money to fix him. I am in a jam here because my other dog Comett had it when he was a pup. We barely had to ,oney to get him better but he is fine now. I am just upset because it isnt fair that just because dasher is older, he can have a longer life. He is a very sweet dog and he has been with us for as long as i can remember. I just need some suggestions of what I as a 13 year old can do to get enough money in time or whether i should (which may be the best thing to do)put him down. It makes me go to tears thinging about it but i have to because my parents are leaving it up to me because he is my dog. i really just need to have all of ur advise whether i should let him be free of pain and try to make him better and cause him maybe a little or a lot of pain:confused and scared

Re: My dog has hip displasia

I hope Dasher will be ok.
    When I was growing up,
we use to have a GSD that had hip displasia, and
    was partially blind and deaf.
As long as her quality of life was still good
the family chose not to put her asleep.
She died in her sleep at the age of 12.

I will be thinking of you and Dasher, that the news
you hear from the Vet on Tuesday will be good.

First let me say Welcome to Pettalk! Then let me say that I am so sorry to hear about your dog's hips...poor pup! Do you have a job or allowance?? Could you talk to the vet and explain the dilemma that you are in, and maybe come up with a payment plan of maybe $10 or $15 a week? Or maybe your parents would be willing to pay and then you could pay them back a portion per week?? I hope everything turns out for the best...Keep us updated, and we'll keep you in our thoughts!

How did Dasher's appt. go??? My Husky/Shep Cody has hip dysplasia and though she's still young..6, she had already developed arthritis in one hip when she was diagnosed. But, with daily glucosamine supplements and some weight loss, she's doing great. She used to limp after just a little exercise. I hope the vet can work with you on this. Would your parents allow you to donate part of your allowance toward her treatment? Maybe you could ask some of the neighbors if you can help out with some chores around their homes, like leaf raking, snow shoveling, odd jobs, etc?? Please let us know how Dasher is doing. I'll keep thinking!

Hmmmm....How about helpin out the vet??? Feeding, cleaning up?? Unlike my people doctors, my vet, with special agreement, has allowed me to pay little by little. My boy Cody, like Sandra's Cody, has hip dyslasia and also takes the same medication. Cody's going to be 11 and is still pretty good so don't even think about "puttiing down" Dasher!

My Lilly has hip dysplasia too. She is three years old and was diagnosed at 18 months. Thankfully, hers was not advanced enough to require surgery. With good exercise (walking), a dramatic weight loss (could stand to lose some more probably, just like her mom ) and quality food and supplements, she isn't even requiring medication for pain.

I hope your Dasher will get a good report and that you will be able to manage the situation without surgery.

Missy has a severe case of hip dysplasia and she's only 1 year old. She had surgery in both hips . I remember crying like a child when my vet showed me the result of the x-ray. She survived both surgery and I saw a vast amount of improvement in the way she walks, run and play. SHe's now free of pain
It's also amazing how our bonding becomes stronger after that surgery. For someone who knows Missy, SHE LOVES EVERYBODY ! Even my friend was telling me that you can't be a jealous person when you own a retriever, but when she's in pain, she likes no one but Mommy

I hope Dasher's case is not that bad I'll be thinking of you both... Hope all goes well when you go to the vet. I hope your Dad will talk to your vet about all the possible options that you can do...

Take care and keep us posted....
