My cousin was a recruiter. If only situations like the cartoon depicts were their biggest issue. LOL

By far, according to him, the largest problems were kids burning their drug tests and criminal records. A close 3rd was ASVAB scores.

A big fat guy, as depicted, COULD make it. If he wanted it enough. BCT is an amazing thing. Some guys lost 40+ pounds. I GAINED 33. I was 113 and skinny as a rail the day I reported to BCT.

Yeah, Puckstop - I am wondering if we will see a story arc here where the kid signs up and gets in shape. He certainly seemed to have the right attitude - even made the recruiter smile (on the phone, anyway )

ASVAB scores? Who cares about ASVAB scores?

After all, through the infinite wisdom of PERSCOM we take our dumbest recruits and give them jobs cooking for everyone and lobbing shells over our heads!

    Makes sense to me!!!

It must have been the same guys who designed the range layout at Drum. The FA firing point was 800 meters behind the tank range. Yep, the gun bunnies were literally lobbing 155mm over the tank range into the impact area.

Add that the tank range tower is the tallest I had ever seen.... It was a experience to have 2 155mm smoke rounds detonate about 10 meters off the tower.

Why does that make me think of Stripes?

    "Where's your sergeant?"

    "BLOWN UP, SIR!!"

Seriously, though, there was a piece a few weeks ago suggesting that the increasing girth of Americans would have a long term effect on the fitness to go into the armed forces.

I have to tell my story about the USMC recruiter I spoke to.

    I told this story before.....

I walked in, spoke about signing up for the Basic Package-haircut, three squares and a gun to shoot?

The recruiter was very gung ho and then says to me, "If you sign up, I get three days off!"

A few weeks later I got a temp job that should have lasted two months....It went on for 30 years.

I still wonder what path I would have taken for three measly days off?
