2.7m sewer snake found in toilet bowl

A Townsville man has had the shock of his life after a 2.7 metre python climbed through the sewerage pipes to emerge through his toilet bowl.

Richard Eves found the massive carpet python in his toilet at around 9pm one night after coming up through the pipes.

Despite its size, carpet pythons are largely harmless to humans but Mr Eves said it was still a shock to find it.

"It is unusual having a python in your toilet bowl — it doesn't happen every day," he said.

"I knew it wasn't dangerous but I was absolutely flabbergasted."

The wrangler who removed the python measured it at an astonishing 2.7 metres, only 30cm off the Townsville area record, Mr Eves said.

"It must have been in the sewer system chasing rats and it got stuck," he said.

"That's how they wound up in a toilet."

Queensland snake catcher Geoff Jacobs said it was quite common for pythons and green tree snakes to make their way into people's toilets.

"It happens all the time...I would probably get called to about 10 year," he said.

"The worst of all is pulling them out because you get covered in sewage. You generally vomit and then go home for a bath with Dettol."

Mr Jacobs said snakes were attracted to the rats, mice and frogs which lived underground in the sewer system.

Neighbour Judy Dupont said while pythons are fairly common in North Queensland, it was still a surprise to find one climbing through the plumbing.

"It was such a bizarre thing to come across," she said.

" It must have been in a very distressed state."

Wombat, We had spiders the size of fifty cent pieces roaming around the outhouse. They were called Wolfies & they didn't eat us but they ate other spiders.

    Redbacks Leaving Country Seat

    THE SUNDAY AGE
    Sunday December 11, 1994

THAT scourge of the outback dunny the redback spider may have been forced out, although it remains a hazard to the unwary.

A study of spider bites in central Australia found that 32 people had severe redback bites in and around Alice Springs in 1991-92.

The serious bite rate was 0.36 per 1000 people, the highest yet reported. The study also found more women and fewer men were being bitten by redbacks.

But it seems no one suffered the painful indignity that sometimes goes with seeking relief in an outhouse. The study showed that the legendary redbacks of the outdoor dunny seat seem to be in the decline.

And of all the people treated for redback spider bites at Alice Springs Hospital during the two-year period, not one was bitten on the genitals.

``No genital bites were recorded, probably because outdoor toilets are no longer common," four experts wrote in the latest `Medical Journal of Australia'.

The team found that two-thirds of the patients were women, and 26 needed antivenom.

No deaths from redbacks bites have been reported since antivenom was introduced in 1956.

Australia is famous for its outback dunnies (outside toilets). These were traditionally famous for being ideal cool dark places for a Redback to build her nest. A famous song by Ralph Ernest ‘Slim’ Newton was written after being bitten on the nether regions after a late night visit to the dunny.

There was a red-back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night,
I didn’t see him in the dark,
But boy! I felt his bite!
I jumped high up into the air,
And when I hit the ground,
    That crafty red-back spider
    Wasn’t nowhere to be found.

There was a red-back on the toilet seat
When I was there last night,
I didn’t see him in the dark,
But boy! I felt his bite!
And now I’m ere in hospital,
    A sad and sorry plight,
And I curse the red-back spider
On the toilet seat last night.

    Rushed in to the missus,
Told her just where I’d been bit,
She grabbed the cut-throat razor blade,
And I nearly took a fit.
I said “Just forget what’s on your mind,
    And call a doctor please,
‘Cause I’ve got a feeling that your cure
    Is worse than the disease.”

    I can’t lay down, I can’t sit up,
And I don’t know what to do,
And all the nurses think it’s funny,
But that’s not my point of view.
    I tell you it’s embarrassing,
(And that’s to say the least)
That I’m too sick to eat a bite,
While that spider had a feast!

And when I get back home again,
I tell you what I’ll do,
    I’ll make that red-back suffer
For the pain I’m going through.
    I’ve had so many needles
That I’m looking like a sieve,
And I promise you that spider
    Hasn’t very long to live!
