I finally did my first transport today!

    Hi all,

I'm finally home after a harrowing start, but a great trip and a great feeling. I drove from Fort Wayne to Indianapolis to pick up Blackie, an Aussie mix, and drove the little sweetheart to Columbus, OH where he was reunited with his foster mom. Now I know why all of you love transport so much. He was such a little love bug. I took a couple of pictures on the digital, but I have to have Mike show me how to post them. As soon as I do, I'll show you guys pictures (whether you want to see them or not! lol)

Congratulations! Now if anybody knows a good smalldog, under 20 lbs, young adult, that might be in or headed TO the Boston area ...

friends of mine had to give up their beloved Henry, a Yorkie. He went blind overnight, no warning, and was NOT adapting well in their old Victorian with stairs and twisting hallways, and he always wanted to be with his people, so would howl unconsolably if they left him downstairs for the night. They tried for two weeks, but finally, for his safety (he fell down the full flight of stairs one night and though his bones weren't broken, his owners' hearts nearly were) and on the advice of their vet, had to re-home him. They drove him 65+ miles to a shelter that promised to take care finding him a home perhaps in a small apartment that would be easier for him to navigate, and he got snatched up by Yorkie Rescue. They have had nice conversations with the rescue woman who took him, and feel sure that he will find a good home.

Now, though, their home is not the same. They are older, and their children are all grown and out of the house, but it didn't feel empty, really until now. I said I'd help, and I know, Logan that lots of the dogs you transport end up in Massachusetts ... and little guys among them? They don't want a puppy - they know pups find homes faster anyway - (and the husband whispered [not another Yorkie, okay] when the wife wasn't looking) but any "young adult" dog who wants a lap to sit on and walks around the neighborhood ...

They've called a couple breed-rescue folks but haven't gotten called back ... and would be fine with a mongrel ...

I'm glad your first transport went smoothly Molly. Mine was pretty chaotic. I had to transport 7 Chinese Cresteds! That was funny. All of my other transports have gone smoothly though, thank goodness!

Its too bad you're so far away Karen. There are some dogs at my shelter who would fit them perfectly.

Let me clear things up....lol. My first transport did NOT start out very well. I was supposed to leave at about 10 and the first girl was given the wrong directions to pick up Blackie and so was about an hour behind. She calls me and I went out to take my meds and they were GONE, so I called to see when I could get them and they said come on over we're not busy. So, I am getting my stuff together and Mike walks in the with the mail and hands me a paper saying out car insurance was cancelled as of the 20th!! The 20th mind you, and we got the notice on the 25th!And to top it all off, we had never gotten the bill in the first place! Needless to say, I was NOT a happy camper. So, I call, and tell the guy my woes and he reinstated the insurance and we sent him the money...I think he realized that they had screwed up pretty badly. THEN, I went to call Mike on my way out and the cell phone didn't work...and I was supposed to call Emily (the first girl) when I got closer to Indy to decide where we were going to meet. So, I had to turn around and go home (I'm not about an hour late), I tried to call Emily on her cell phone and she was unavailable. I left her a voice mail hoping she would get it and then took off. I finally got the cell phone to work about a half an hour after I took off. I got a hold of Emily and my thoughts were correct, and I should have told her, but the intersection where we were going to meet (70/465 Liz) was closed, so I had to find an alternate route. We finally did meet up and I picked up Blackie without incident and things went a little smoother after that. When I got to Columbus, I found Robin right away, but she was afraid I wasn't going to be able to find it because the people had given her the wrong directions to the restaurant, but I found it by virtue of the sign on the highway. All it all, it was a stressful day, but the end result was great. Robin was SO thrilled to get him back and is hoping to find him a forever home right in her hometown.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

Karen, the group I have done work for is All Pets Rescue, out of Foxboro. Check their website at www.allpetsrescue.org . Sandra or I can put you in touch with Sheri, the coordinator, as well. Sandra works with her for NEARR (North East Area Retriever Rescue), and I work with All Pets Rescue. I do think that most of the dogs I have transported for them are going to be "big" dogs, or already are, but surely they get those smaller ones occasionally.

Best of luck to your friends. I know that broke their hearts, but it sounds like it was the best thing for all.

Hehehe, will ya settle for a "pocket shepherd" at about 40-50?? (Gotta keep plugin")!

Yesterday we went to an adoption event. There was an adorable Chow-Pit mix there. Everyone was asking the rescue lady what he was. Her answer was, "What are you looking for???" She said even her vet was stumped. To me, it looked like a Pit-Chow mix. I could see it. He was soooooo precious. I must say, I was tempted.....

Good going Mugsy! Even though it was a little trying!! I did my first transport two weekends ago for North East All Retriever Rescue and I'm still smiling from the experience! You're an angel!!

Karen. Have you tried saveadog.org?? They are a Boston based resuce group I volunteer with. What a selection of pups of all sizes and shapes!! Give them a try. They have lots of "Meet the Dogs" days at Petco's throughout your area!
    Good luck!

I went right to the saveadog site, but they've got lotsa bigger dogs, and some puppies that will be bigger than they're looking for. And, as I said, they'd rather not have a puppy, and know that pups'll find homes, anyway. I'll talk to my friend again tomorrow, maybe one of the rescue places she called got back to her over the weekend ...

I KNOW there's a dog out there somewhere for them.
