Fleas!!... argh...

as you know I took the boys for a bath... but yesterday I found flea droppings which I thought were dust and when tried to shake them off I saw the creepy crawler... argghhh!!

I thought the bath would´ve had taken care of that?... or do they need multiple baths?... I have no clue... never dealt with fleas... tick yes I have but never fleas EVER....

what do you recommend to get rid of them... another bath? a flea collar?... what?...

Oh my Fleas are sometimes hard to get rid of.. Yes bath the babies in Flea Shampoo & then go to your Vet for some Advantage Flea med to go on the back inbetween the shoulder blades.. Yes I am sure if these wittle ones was on the streets they will have plenty of Fleas.. Good Luck

but they already had a bath at the vet... supposedly a flea/tick one...

ETA: just talked to the vet... when I went pick them up he wasn´t there...

he said they were infested... and he game them a shot after the bath so if any remaining fleas/tick bite... they´d die... and to have them get this again in 3 weeks.. and for the mean time fumigate the outside or the places they tend to sleep in as they might be there...

the bad part is that they brought them home so know I´ve have to treat my dogs also... I´ve had ticks on tick season.. but not a prob...

now I have to deal with fleas.. urgh

The bath won't kill any eggs, nor do the effects last a long time. You are best off with something like Advantage like Helene mentioned; they get a skin dose monthly, and all parasites are taken care of.

the bath was not a regular bath... it was a flea/tick killer one...

but will look into advantage.. although I´ve never seen it here ... I´ve seen some but for dogs and it´s really hard to find...

I wonder if I can have it shipped ...hmm...

I think it is the regular Advantage that is for dogs that you can use on cats also. You have to use a much smaller proportion though. I know someone posted the dosage on here another time. I don't think you can do that with Frontline or the Advantage Multi, but it seems to me that my vet allows it with the plain Advantage.

Isabell most of the time it has to be a prescription from the Vet for the baby.. Now you can go on E-Bay & I know I have seen it on there.. Just make sure it is for Cats only.. good luck

I was always told not to use flea meds for dogs on cats, so I buy for both the dogs and cats. I just don't want to take a chance of giving the cats too much of the stronger dose that is specified for dogs only!
Advantage or Frontline is best and you can get that at a reasonable price thru drsfostersmith.com and they do ship international also.
Also being that you are in a warmer climate, you probably should start using it year round. Once you get rid of the little nasty critters on the animals and in the house, you shouldn't have any more as long as you stick to the once a month schedule.

Since I have 6 cats, I've been buying the largest size dog advantage which is the one for dogs over 55lbs. A vet that I used to take my cats to even suggested that I do this to help save me money because it has the same ingredients in it as the cat ones.

I either buy it online, at a pet store, or through a vet that's at a pet store because it's cheaper that way. I use small syringes and I put some tape on them at the right measurement because the numbers will eventully wear off. You could also use a permanent marker to do this.

I squirt the tube of advantage into a plastic test tube and then put a cap on it and I place it in a small glass so it's standing up. With 6 cats I don't even use one tube per month so I still have some left over. I do this every month year round and ever since I've been using advantage I've never had another flea problem.

For cats over 9lbs you need to measure .8ml and for cats under 9lbs you need to measure .4ml. You just separate their fur until you see their skin and then I squirt a little bit in several different places. I usually try to do it near their shoulder blades so that they can't try to lick it off. Sometimes I'll also do the back of their necks or heads too. You need to be quick because they hate the smell. I noticed that you mentioned that your vet gave the cats a 'shot' for the fleas after a bath. The only injection I know of for flea treatment is Program. Program works well with regular Advantage (not the Advantage Multi version) but you don't want to give both Program and Revolution or both Program and Advantage Multi because they have similar ingredients in them and you would be giving them too much of the same thing. But if you wait 3-4 weeks, it would be safe to use either Revolution or Advantage Multi. But you can use Advantage (regular) safely in conjunction with Program.
Program sterilized eggs and keeps them from hatching and works kind of like birth control. Revolution and Advantage Multi do this too but they also kill adult fleas (which program doesn't do) each time a flea bites the cat and then they die off.
I would call your vet and ask him if he gave the cats Program and if so, you could safely give them regular Advantage but not the Revolution or Advantage Multi.
This is how it was a few years ago and I don't think it has changed.

Oh no....., fleas are an absolute pest, and SO hard to get rid of......
My 4 girls had fleas in September. It is over since beginning of November......

This is what I did:
- Each cat a dose of Frontline Plus
- Wash all cat items with a desinfecting product
- Spray on all your furniture (fleas can get everywhere!) too
- Vacuum EVERY day!!
- After 2 weeks, I used "bombs"; these kill ALL living fleas in the house; not the eggs though...
- Be sure to give the cats another Frontline plus after 4 weeks.

-Once the fleas are all gone, you may switch to Frontline (not the Frontline Plus)
The reason why it takes so long is because the little eggs come out too, which means new fleas!! That is why it is important then to treat the cats with Frontline; every flea who bites the cats dies then.
It might be good to spray some items again; we did!

According to what my vet says, baths are only good if there are only a few fleas, not when the cats are infested with fleas...

I know how enervating this is, but you will need to be patient. It will get better, I promise!!

There is a pill called Capstar that the vet's office gave me for Percy when I found him and he was covered in fleas. They started dying within an hour.

Capstar works great for killing adult fleas at the moment (works great for rescues etc just before you bring them in the house), however it doesn't have the residual effect that Frontline/Advantage have. If the fleas are that bad in her house then she needs a product with residual effect to really combat the problem.
