On June 23, 2008, the operator of Critter Control of Richmond—a so-called pest control company—killed three feral cats behind a television station near Richmond, Virginia, according to newspaper accounts and court documents. On July 7, 2008, that person, Keith Copi, was arrested and the Commonwealth’s Attorney charged him with three counts of violating Virginia’s anti-cruelty law. This law makes it a crime to “cruelly or unnecessarily” kill cats. Va. Code Ann. § 3.1-796.122 (2008) If convicted, Mr. Copi could face up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine for each count.
Alley Cat Allies and its supporters know that all cats deserve protection, regardless of their level of socialization to humans. There are anti-cruelty laws protecting cats in all 50 states. Prosecutors should uphold the law and prosecute all cruelty cases regarding stray and feral cats. Yet too often prosecutors don’t. Those who do deserve our thanks and support.

I am so glad to see someone actually UPHOLDING animal cruelty laws. It makes me sad that three kitties had to go to the RB but maybe other prossicutors will learn from this and start enforcing the laws that are already in place.
