Hyperthyroid meds... how much is too much?

My mom called me to tell me their one cat, Lucey, is now on thyroid medication (methamizole I think it is called). The vet has Lu on 5mg twice a day.

Isn't that a high dose?? I know I gave the same meds to my one FIV guy, and his thyroid was not controlled when he first came to me, and he was on 5mg. once a day (1/2 AM, 1/2 PM).

A woman in another rescue that I was fostering for said that it is almost a lethal dose for a cat.

    Any thoughts on this??

I wonder if she meant 5 mg 'broken in half' and given twice a day, like your FIV kitty?

You might want to double check on that...that might have been what the vet said, and maybe something got misunderstood.

That dose is okay. Google tapazole for cats and you'll see that they can have 5mg even BID (twice a day).
