    Embarrassing!

A friend was up this weekend and she wanted to meet my cats so I picked her up from the airport and she spent the day at our place.

Jasmine sniffed out her Aunty Julianne and they were friends within about two minutes. Mini, on the other hand, saw the stranger and fled up the stairs in terror (even though I'd been telling him all week that she was coming! Maybe I need to re-learn Siamese speak.)

Mini slowly crept down the stairs to suss out Julianne and all of a sudden I thought there was a death adder in the house as there was this almighty HISSSSSSSS! It was Mini hissing at the stranger, protecting his little kingdom. I was so embarrassed! He then came downstairs and did it again!

He finally found a comfort zone of a metre but as soon as she looked at him, he'd run away. She's a cat lover so she wasn't doing anything scary, he just had one of his little Siamese personality changes!

Wow. I'm sorry that he was so upset. I know that my cats can be unpredictable around strangers too. It always seems like if you tell someone how friendly your cats are they will do the opposite. Storm is usually the most friendly and will even greet strangers. Pepper will either be very outgoing or very shy. Sunny will usually be very cautious because he needs to come to you and gets scared if a stranger tries to come to him. He sometimes gets so scared that he hides under the bed. They have never hissed at any one though. I hope that you have better luck in the future. Maybe he smelled a scent on your friend that he didn't like.

It's funny how inconsistent they can seem to us - it might be something such as smell but our noses will never pick up on it. And it's funny how cats will always target the least cat friendly person in a room, as if to stir them up!

That is so true! I don't know why...maybe he's trying to win her over...but during family functions, my BF's(Joey) cat Lestat will always jump on Joey's Grandmother's lap for atention and pets. Out of all the people in the room who would be glad to pet him and love him, he chooses the one person in the room that really doesn't want to have anything to do with cats. Go figure!

    ahhh

I wouldn't be embarrassed.....your friend should understand that cats have there own way of doing things! Maybe your cat sees something in this person that you as a human don't??
One of my cats never greets new comers. She is selective of who can catch a glimpise of her! Can't say I've ever had a cat that was into protecting the home front like yours did! What the heck chalk it up to strange yet ingtriging cats actions!

    enjoy

You shouldn't feel embarassed. Kitties are the most unpredictable creatures. They really can surprise you. Juni hissed at some of my friends too, even to some that are really cat lovers. I felt embarassed only the first time.

I think I was only embarrassed because I had told my friend how wonderful and friendly my babies were, and there was Mini hissing like a snake! She had a laugh. I came home one night in the dark and forgot to say hello to the kitties. Mini must've been surprised and hissed at me too - mummy not happy! Such a big brave act for a cat who runs away when I sneeze!

Oh my Misty is very unpredictable. She has her head determined to set on someone she will whether they like cats or not. The next time she won't have anything to do with them. I don't know if your pets are like Misty or not but it seems she wants to be near the people that like her least. She is obseesed to make them a friend. If it is someone that wants to hold her and love on her she wants nothing to do with them. She is so funny I never know how she is going to be around people.

I can totally relate!! I was having a Mary Kay thing at our apartment for a friend from work. The only people that were able to come were my cat-loving best friend, Kim and my mother-in-law (who Noah HATES). Just as my mother-in-law is telling Kim how much Noah hates her (Maybe because she goes to pet him while he hissing at her.... ), Kim jumps up and says "That's wierd, Noah LOVES me, he's always so sweet when I'm here." Anyway...Kim goes to pet him after praising him and he bites her in THREE places. Not just a few warning bits...he clamped on!! She had two bruises and three open wounds from him!!! I felt so bad. I just am so glad she has four cats at home and just received a tetnis shot a few months ago from when her cat got stuck in a door and bit her on a vein (same arm!) out of fear.

It IS Embarrassing after you talk about how WONDERFUL they are and they maul your friends!!

I don't like to laugh at the misfortune of others, but I can just see Noah latching on like a vampire bat!!! How funny! And not coming back for seconds, but thirds!!!

I agree....but it is funny when you read it.

I called to check on her a few days ago and she said her injuries are turning into scars...that they blend well with the ones her own cats gave her! Needless to say, Noah had to write her an "I'm sorry I tried to eat your arm Auntie Kim" card...

Very nice of Noah to send a card Do you think cats can read each other's scars left on human limbs, like the 'I was here' that people scratch into trees?!

My RB cat Sydney always had this habit to sniff all over a stranger before accepting them !!! If they tried to pet him , before his "examination" was finished , he gave them a lifetime memory with his nails ....
Maya is a bit more friendly ; no sniffing , just watching from a distance ,and after a couple of minutes , she gets closer and demands to be petted !!
How different cats can be , hey !!

I went to her house this weekend and she has his card on her fridge.

That's funny! I wonder if they remember? That would be too funny! Kind of like them branding us!!!
