    Nebo might be sick

I'm getting worried about Nebo. He's had diarhea for maybe 4-5 days now. I thought it was just because I had changed his food. I've given him some stuff from Petco called Pet Pectillin which is supposed to help. He hasn't done anything so far. He had been acting very normal besides that. But this morning he wouldn't eat anything. He is usually a pig in the morning, and snarfs up all of his food. I even gave him one of the puppy biscuits he eats all the time and he wouldn't touch that. He wouldn't touch cottage cheese either which he normally likes. I did get him to eat some softer treats called Canine Carryouts. He drank water ok too. He also acted somewhat sleepier then usual. I called a vet but because it is Sunday they'll charge me $65 just to come in, not including any treatment. I'm going to take him Monday, he needs his 2nd set of shots anyway. I talked to someone in the vets office and all she told me is that he could have Parvo. Gee, thanks that makes me feel much better. How do they get that anyway..I know from other dogs...but how do the other dogs get it? Well an hour or so after he wouldn't eat this morning, he ran into Smokey/Reggie's room and started eating their food (which isn't going to help his diarhea). I tried to get him to eat his food again. The little monster, he'd only eat it if I fed him with a spoon. lol. He didn't eat much of it...but at least he ate some. I think he might have worms or something. Anybody know?

Oh, one more thing. I'm hoping he didn't eat anything that made him sick. He eats EVERYTHING. I watch him 24/7 but he still gets into stuff. I know he ate 2 earplugs because they were in his poop. He's always chewing on plants/trees outside.......and about everything he can get his mouth onto inside.

Oh, poor Nebo Change of diet can often trigger tummy upsets. Is it very hot where you are? Sometimes heat and a little dehydration can be the culprit as well. With my girls, it's usually "something they ate!" They get into everything, and possibly Nebo did too. If they didn't ask, bring a poop sample. That can be checked for blood (sometimes not visible) parasites, worms, etc. Have you seen any worms (yuck!) in his poop? In the meantime, try and keep him hydated and feed him plain cooked hamburger drained of fat or poached chicken, both with some plain rice. Worms could definitely be a possibility. I do not know much about the signs and symptoms of parvo. I post a link if someone doesn't chime in first. Hugs and kisses to Nebo. And please keep us updated and let us know how the vet visit went! Parvo is a highly contagious disease that causes diarrhea and vomiting. The most common way to transmit Parvo from one dog to another is via contaminated feces. Parvo can also be carried on the dog's hair and feet. This is why it is so important to not have puppies around other dogs you do not know until they have two sets of shots minimum.

Since Nebo has not been vomiting, if it is Parvo then it is in the early stage and can be treated. A lot of adult dogs carry the Parvo virus but are not as susceptable as puppies because they have more mature immune systems and are vaccinated against the disease.

Get Nebo to the vet tomorrow morning and let them diagnose. It may be just he ate something that doesn't agree with him. In the mean time follow Sandra's advice about hamburger and plain rice. This binds the dog and is easy on the digestive system. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the info. I sure hope that he doesn't have Parvo. He has been around Reggie, Smokey, McKinney, Sydney, and Lady. Dogs that I know. But Reggie and Smokey haven't had shots in who knows how long, and I don't know if McKinney, Sydney, or Lady have had their second shots. I was planning on getting them done this week, I just remember the breeder saying something about getting them done at 10 weeks which is about now.

I haven't seen any worms in his poop. I was just reading in one of my books that some puppies are even born with them, and some of the symptoms seemed to fit him. The breeder gave me a little pamphlet that has what his shots are, and what has been done. It doesn't look like he has been dewormed.

It is hot right now, but not too bad. He stays inside most of the time, and when he's outside, he's in a big dog run with a cover for shade. He has access to water inside and out, along with a swimming pool.

We tried to take his temperature. I don't know how accurate it was, but it was around 101 degrees which I think 100-102 is normal.

He acted great tonight. He had tons of energy and was very playful. I gave him some rice mixed in with his food, and he ate most of it. He also ate a few treats. Still has diarhea though.

I'll have to visit my bank account and take him to the vet. If I don't find a real job soon I'm not going to *have* a bank account.

He acts perfectly fine today--eating, drinking, playing. Still has diarhea though I think, although I haven't actually seen lol. But he'll go to the vet sometime today or tomorrow (I've seen a few of the places are closed on monday). I'll let you know what happens.

    Could it be giardia?

Roxey and Angus (Huney had it when we first got her too) both had this. Everytime they would have to poop, it would be runny like diarriah. The vet gave them panacur dewormer. You couldn't see the worms, but when he did a fecal he found them. Maybe this is what Nebo has? I hope so.
I personally don't think it could be parvo, because Angus had that when he was a very small pup (8 wks) and ohhh....he was soooo sick. He kept thowing up yellow mucus, he got dehydrated, couldn't eat, drink or hardly move. But you definately should get him to the vet.
To take Huney for this it costed me $51. This included the medication (3 days worth), fecal exam and office cost.
Just wanted to let you know!

I took him to the vet today. He found out that he has tonsilitis (sp?)/sore throat. He also had a slight fever (103). I asked him what could have caused it and if it could cause his diarhea. He said something about bacteria being everywhere which could cause it, and that it could cause the diarhea, or that might just be because of the dog food change. He gave me some pills to give him for a week which I'm going to start tomorrow.

The sore throat is probably why he didn't want to eat that morning. He is eating now, although not quite as much as normal I don't think. I've given him some rice, and I've softened his food with hot water.

He said he can't be given his shots or dewormed until he is over this. So I'm going back in a week to see about that.

A few days after we got him he seemed to have a sort of infection in one eye, and a bit of a runny nose. We were on vacation at the time, and there wasn't exactly a vet in the Grand Tetons. I cleaned his eye often, and it just went away. I'm wondering now though if he hasn't been sick for longer then I thought.

Thanks for the info, Anna. Can't giardia be caused from drinking water? He has drank water from a couple of lakes/streams (he loves water, I can't keep him out of it lol). When I go back I'll have to make them check about that, it could be the cause.

The pills I'm giving him are called Clavamox. I'm not sure what they are really.

It's a stronger penicilian. With todays "superbugs" they give this to treat multiple infections or stonger strains of infection.

He'll be fine. Thanks for the update.

It's always so upsetting when our pets get sick. I hope Nebo recovers quickly.
