Fourth Toxic Nation Report Released: Three Ontario politicians found to be polluted
Toxic Nation released its fourth ‘body burden’ report on September 7 th, 2007 - Toxic Nation at Queen’s Park: A Report on Pollution in Three Ontario Politicians. The Ontario politicians tested were: Premier Dalton McGuinty, NDP Leader Howard Hampton, and Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory. The report tested for 70 chemicals, including two chemicals we tested for the first time: phthalates and bisphenol A.
Our report illustrates yet again that there is a shocking array of toxic pollutants that people are exposed to. The number of pollutants found in each politician’s body was similar. The highest number of chemicals found was 44 for John Tory, while Howard Hampton had 42 and Dalton McGuinty had 41.
“Harmful pollutants surround us every day in the air we breathe, food we eat and products we use. And, as our study shows, the pollutants contaminate us, too,” said Dr. Rick Smith, Executive Director, Environmental Defence. “Not even the Premier is immune.”
A total of 46 pollutants, of the 70 tested for, were detected in the three volunteers, including bisphenol A, 8 phthalates, 13 PCBs, 10 organochlorine pesticides, 6 PAHs, 4 PFCs, and 4 organophosphate insecticide metabolites.
