Does a tornado in a desert turn into a sand funnel? How does that work? Not that I wish a tornado on anyone, not even "Lost" Angeles.

The area is the "high" desert- It's the start of the Mojave. It's really been built up, so there's more "urban sprawl" than sand.
Civilization starts close to where the freeways end. As the roads go farther it gets more desert-y. If you go farther east you are on towards Las Vegas.
