What Are Your Thoughts On Science Diet

JoJo (who btw has a middle name now - Louise), is eating Science Diet kibble. This is the food she came with when I adopted her at the SPCA. What's nice is that Fenway doesn't like it one bit. In the past he ate the cats food. But because he doesn't like it, he lives it alone and JoJo Louise can eat it in peace.

But I'm wondering if it's a good cat food to give her?

What is your opinion on Science Diet Adult Original cat food?

Here are the FIRST FEW ingredients of the Science Diet:

    Chicken by-product meal
    Ground Whole Grain Corn
    Brewers Rice
Animal Fat (preserved with citric acid & tocopherols)
    Corn Gluten Meal
    Chicken Liver Flavor

Here are the FIRST FEW ingrendients of the Fromms:

    Duck
    Duck Meal
    Pearled Barley
    White Rice
    Sweet Potato
    Dried Egg
    Chicken Broth
    Dried Tomato Pomace
    Turkey Liver
Canola OIl (preserved with mixed tocopherols)
I love Fenway, JoJo, Olivia and Nonnie!

I've never really been a huge fan of science diet, I feel that it's way overpriced. For the same amount of money you can get a much higher quality food. I'm also a bit leery of SD because last month when Corkscrew had his UTI he was put on a Hills (Science Diet) prescription diet, something in the food didn't agree with him and he developed pancreatitis which has now cost me several hundred dollars in vet bills. However I do realize that every cat is different and they will all react differently to different foods.

The second food that you posted sounds much better than Science Diet based on the ingredient list and I would much prefer it.
    I've been Defrosted!

Thanks for the great signature Kay!

Years back were feeding Science Diet Weight Management.
It was good stuff but I found Nutro Weight Management was just as good and cheaper. So we switched and they were on that for several years until recently when I switched to Purinia Naturals.

My only special diet kitty is now, Thumper who is on A/D Rx from Hills (can).
    LOVES IT
Owned by my 8 precious furry kids... My 3 daughters Cindy & Abby & Aly and 5 sons Skinny, Stephen, Carson, Fuzzmuzz and Franklin.
Owned by two special canine sons Coco and Snoopy and two canine daughters, Sadie and Gretchen

Always in our hearts RBButterscotch & RBThumper, RB Ms. Eleanor

I used Science Diet exclusively for 13 years. It was recommended by the vet.

Then I joined Pet Talk. And learned about reading labels and figuring out foods. And I heard rumors that Science Diet may be contributing to the cases of hyperthyroidism in cats. I had one cat with that and now a second. So in January ( BEFORE all the pet food recalls) after lots of studying, I switched to Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul.

What got me looking was that when Sugar arrived Dec 9th, not only was this what she had been eating in her foster home for 8 months; she REFUSED to eat Science Diet dog food; or Nutro Max; or anything else I brought home from PetCo. In desperation, as the dog hadn't eaten in FOUR DAYS, I found a place which carried Chicken Soup. (There is a store right up the street from me which carries it; but they also sell puppies, and as Sugar is a puppy mill rescue, I just couldn't do it! I now travel half an hour to get the food. )

Fromms is definitely a better quality food than Science Diet. Other good ones include Felidae, Merrick, Canidae, Old Mother Hubbard.

The ingredients in SD aren't that much different than the ingredients in the store brands. Either buy the store brand and save your money or get a better food.

I don't like SD. Or Iams. That must be obvious. Eukanuba wsa decent for a while, but the critters weren't eating it.

I feed Veterinarians Formula now and Pinnacle. One for each cat. Wouldn't it be nice it they both liked the same thing?

Corn may be a protein but it is also a carb. You have no way of controlling what is in the chicken meal. There might be restrictions on meals but the contents can vary.

Science Diet is not a food that I choose to feed to my pets.

That does not mean that if someone else chooses to feed it to their pets that I think they are a "Bad" person or feeding their pet "crap". It's just not the quality food that I would feed to my pets. BUT it's all in what works for your pets and your budget. If your pets eat it, like it, and are doing fine... and you're happy with it, then theres no reason to change.

I've never used Science Diet before but from the list of ingredients it doesn't sound very good. Felidae, Innova and some of the other brands already mentioned would be much healthier. I believe in feeding your animals the best food that you can afford.

I now feed my cats Innova Evo dry and wet food and Storm is still on his Royal Canin Urinary S/O wet and dry but he also gets some Chicken & Rice Felidae wet mixed in with it and some of the Innova Evo dry food sometimes too. Starr is still having some issues so he may be going on a raw diet soon or something else.
