dogs or puppies

Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me I'm
looking into getting a puppy,but I want a puppy that will protect our little girl but at the same time protect the house. We did have a lab/broader collie cross but we had to get her put to sleep because she bite our daugther

. So which would be a good breed to get ? thank you for your help

i would think a lab would be the best but seeing that one bit your daughter.... was your daughter doing anything to it????
I think german shepherds are good with lil kids if you train it and get it as a puppy to grow up with the child and get to know the child.... but then again im not a dog expert =O)

My family had a beagle mix and a husky/GSD mix and they were both protective of the children and of the home. They never bit anyone. The husky/GSD was so intimidating when a stranger approached. If you're not sure go to http://www.personalogic.com/ . You answer questions about the type of dog you want, and it lets you compare breeds. Good luck with your search. If you have a large yard and fair-sized house, a Great Pyrenees is great with children and house guarding. However, they are a giant breed and shed a lot. They are very intelligent and independent so they can learn obedience, but may not want to do what you ask(stubborn). You would also have to be able to handle a 115+lb. dog. They are extemely loving and protective towards children. They are guardians of flocks and they consider the children their flock. They need a job to do (guarding home and family)or else they are not happy. The Great Pyrenees is a wonderful pet for the right family!

Well I have to cast my vote for a Basset of course. My basset hound Daisy is protective of us and barks at anyone coming to the house, but she'd never bite. Although to us she looks comical trying to be all big and bad, it really does scare people. That low Basset bark can sound scary! They are great dogs, very gentle and adorable, and they are very flexible to your life. I said in another post that I read in a dog book once "A basset can be whatever you want it to be: avid hunter or couch potato. Serious and loyal or clown. Or it can be all of these." They are wonderful dogs and if you raise them right, they will be even better! Make sure you introduce her to your daughter carefully and if she is very young, you might need to teach her to "be gentle." My little cousins live next door and Daisy is great with them, we just have to remind them "Be gentle!" and they'll sit there patting Daisy for hours. Good luck with your next dog!

When I was a little girl my mom bred Dobermans. I grew up with a male doby named Red. He was very friendly but if anybody tryed anything he was there to stop it. We live on the beach and he wouldn't let me near the water he would grab my sleeve. And one time I got too close to a mother Swan and she charged me and Red got in between me and her and jump in the water to scare her away but the thing was that he didn't know how to swim but he didn't care he would do anything to protect me.
I know they have a bad rep. but if you get one from a good breeder and you give tons of love it will be your gardian for life.

I'd have to say boxer, definately. They are voted number one with children, while at the same time, are very protective of it's family. They are big clowns with great personality, don't need to be groomed very much, don't shed hardly at all, and are medium sized, well behaved dogs. TRUST me on this one, boxers are definately, absolutely, positively, the right breed for you! Look them up, do some research on boxers, and let us know what you decide!

Some photos and sometimes histories of the pets are available. Sad there are so many. I checked my area and was particularly moved by Bonnie and Clyde, two Golden Retrievers found in a rural area. Wish I had the space... If I keep reading things like this I may turn into "Mother Logan"

You guys are too much!!!! Am I "Mother Logan". Yes, I have too many pets and am always worried about "one more". You now know I have already broken my pledge of "no more". Butter is here. There is no more room. I need to win the lottery to find a bigger place so I can take them in to my heart's content!!

Ah, but Logan, we know you (and know ourselves) - as long as there was one more homeless animal out there, your heart would never be content! There's no lottery yet that would make abandoning pets, or not being resposible owners and spaying and neutering illegal, so I'm afraid we're all stuck just loving and housing as many as we responsibly can!

I don't know the details of why you decided to put down the lab/border collie cross who bit your daughter. Some dogs with working dog instincts can demonstrate 'nipping' or 'biting' to herd. Those who show this often direct it at children & may not be suitable to have as pets with children. If this applied in your case, I wonder if you got advice about possible rehoming of the dog in another sort of environment...before you decided to have the dog put down?

hi there.. we have a malamute/husky part wolf pup (well 11months old now) and expecting our first baby next month and we were worried about if our dog would be good with the baby and getting use to having someone else around but so far she seems to be fine with our friends 6 month old. I think it just depends on the dog, and also if the baby or child is "messing" with the dog to the point where the dog attacks. Either that or the dog is just extremly jealous and will do anything to retreat, sometimes it takes some obedience training with some dogs, but some dogs are goodwith children and protect to house; i wouldnt know what kind sorry to say. but i hope you find one.
