    Food for joints?

    Hi all!

Zoey is having more problems with her joints. Zoey is having a hard time in agility so she is now having a break. I already have her on joint medicine, but I was curious if there was any vegetables, fruits, spices, or anything like that I can add to her food to help her joints?
Thanks so much Ashley for the siggy!

Pm me if you would like a list of herbals to run past your vet. There are many foods that in combination can be very beneficial, but without knowing a history I hesitate to blanket a list.

I've been giving Nebo The Missing Link with joint support. I don't know if he has any joint problems, but he's almost 5 and he seemed to be slowing down a bit so I thought it might help. I've noticed it giving him more energy and he also really likes the taste. You can buy it at Petco and Petsmart.

Amy, is there a whole bunch of different types of missing link to choose from, or just one kind? Do you have to buy more then a bag a week?
Thanks so much Ashley for the siggy!

As far as I know there's only two kinds, the regular formula and the joint support formula. You give 1 teaspoon (its powder) for every 25 lbs, I mix it in Nebo's food. The bag says it is a 2 month supply for an average size dog. I've been giving it to Nebo (60 lbs) for almost a month and I have about half a bag left. It costs about $20-$25 per bag.

The Arthritis Foundation has some info for arthritis in dogs.
Among the suggested supplements is Omega 3 Fatty acids - which I believe is in salmon.

    Here is the link:

It is 2 pages of info.

Don't forget regular water therapy (swimming), because it's such a passive exercise, and massage work wonders also.

The short answer is: No, there is no magical combination of veggies, fruits, or spices that will ease joint pain.

If your dog has signs of arthritis, then it needs a permanent break from agility exercises. As another poster suggests swimming is the best possible exercise as there is no impact stress on the joints.

A recent supplement you might want to look into is an extract from sheanut oil only recently available in the U.S. Originally designated BSP-201, and marketed as Flexnow.

    Sheanut oil

There could be some validity to the theory they have about their product, although no one outside of the company has conducted any studies on their product. I've never used it, and have never used it on my dogs. If you can separate out the placeblo effect, you might want to try it out on yourself first. If your dog is prone to pancreatitis or other metabolic problems, then as with any supplement you should consult with your Vet first.
