Sticking his nose where it doesnt belong.

I went for a walk with my black lab yesterday afternoon and he stuck his nose where it didnt belong inside a fence to sniff around and a dog latched on to his nose. there are 3 bite marks that are on top and one in the creese of his nose where there is just a little piece of skin hanging and a hole. It bled i cleaned it up but i was wondering if i can put neosporen on it or if there was something that i can put on it that will help it not get infected.

He will probably - in fact, most assuredly - lick off anything you put on it. I'd just keep an eye on it, and make sure it stays clean.

This is what happened to Bud after he and the GSD next door got into it under the fence awhile back.

I didn't do anything to it, I just made sure it was kept clean (he did a good job of it himself)

It didn't take all that long to heal up.

I'm sure it will heal ok on it's own. Salt water helps keep it clean and help with healing.

In the UK, we have a creamy ointment in a tube called germolene that works wonders and dogs don't really like the taste of it either so wouldn't lick it off. It really does clear up cuts, sores and skin irritations. For those types of wounds that need drying out, an antiseptic powder works great too.

I always keep both in handy in case I need them.

For any of the wounds not near the entrance of the nose, a triple antibiotic salve, with just a trace or smear of tea tree oil on top would discourage licking. If any of the punctures are deep, then nosey puppy may need a short course of antibiotics.

WELL! I am glad there was a fence between the two of them! Geepers!

I put bag balm on things like that. I liked what someone said about rinsing with saline (salt water).

I'm glad I read this - I didn't know that, and I douse all their little cuts with peroxide. My mom always said the foam would flush everything out! (of course, she wasn't a vet)

Hope his little nosie gets better soon. If you see any signs of infection - it swells, oozes, gets hot, or he seems lethargic - take him to the vet. Puncture wounds can fester just under the surface where you can't see them, until they abcess, which gets ugly.

Really?? I guess I'd better tell my mom. She's ALWAYS used peroxide on all of us.....animals included. Huh, you learn something new everyday. Thanks for the info.

oh no poor guy, his nose looks sore!!!! ya peroxcide is the worst you can use, we found this out when my mom was diagnosed years ago with diabetes and the dr told us this, we never knew, we had always used it.
