    Is she dying?

Bonnie isn't doing well. Her liver has gone down dramatically, but she's skin and bones despite eating some.

Well, the last few days, she hasn't wanted to eat at all. NOTHING. But yet she has diarrhea that is thick and black and smells something awful (sorry to be so graphic). She's very lethargic. She shivers every time my mom changes her diaper. She felt warm to me earlier, now her paws are ice cold. She's taking short, shallow breaths.

I've never seen a dog go to the bridge on it's own. Do you think she is leaving us?

Oh, and if she is, we aren't going to call the vet to try and prolong her agony. We want her to go when she's ready, so no extreme measures will be necessary.

The shallow breathing sounds like a sign, as well as being cold. Poor dear, just love her up in case this is her last night with you.

And how is not at least having your suffering baby humanely PTS NOT prolonging her agony??? She's obviously BEEN in agony for at least a few days while you watch her suffer.

I see your point. With the exception of today, she's still been fairly alert.

I'll try and get my mom to see reason and at least take her to the vet to see if she needs to be PTS.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

Very sad news. If she is going, but makes it through the night, taking her to be PTS would be the kindest thing. Sometimes they can last for days, just lingering. Bonnie will be in my prayers.

I am thankful you took it in the manner I intended. I feared you might take offence, however I did think that perhaps there was a parent involved in the decision and not just you alone.

I don't dissagree with her not wanting to do expensive treatments or heroic efforts to keep her alive. I hope your mom can see that having her PTS would be the most humane thing to do at this point to eliminate the suffering.

Either way I do feel for you and your dog. You have my sympathy and prayers.

I know it's one of the hardest decisions you'll ever make. But it's also one of the most unselfish. It sounds as though her offensive output is due to blood altho it's not red. Poor little dear. I know the pain, believe me, and as much as I miss my Cody, I know I did the right thing.

No offense taken. I know there's always that risk here given that we aren't able to hear the tone of voice.

On a side note, Bonnie is my mom's dog. Just to clarify, I'm 31 years old, so I'm not a teenager. My mom now lives with me to care for my son while I work.

Bonnie just fell off the bed and didn't flinch, or try to get up. She just laid in the position that she fell. I saw her slipping, but couldn't get to her fast enough. She can't even hold up her head now. I asked my mom if she thought it was time to let her go, she said, "yeah."

I think we'll take her tomorrow if she makes it through the night.

I'm sorry she's having to go through this. If she hasn't been drinking either, it might make her a little more comfortable to give her some water with an eye dropper.

Well, she made it through the night. She tried to get up to drink water, but she couldn't stand on her own.

We are going to send her to the bridge tonight.

((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))) to you Debby, your mom & bonnie. May her last hours with you be as pain free as possible and may her passing be quick and easy. I know it is so hard but it is a truest act of love you can show her. Give her a kiss for me and tell her we will miss her here on PT too.

    more ((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))
