GR puppy behavior

My parents recently adopted a GR puppy. He's so cute and a total love
There is one problem though: He is excessive about chewing and nipping peoples hands, arms , legs...........whatever he can get to that's exposed.
The nipping is not aggressive , but he is very persistant about it. My Mom has had some deep cuts from it (puppy teeth are so sharp).
They know it is pretty normal puppy behavior, but they are concerned because he seems to be getting worse as time goes on. (instead of better)
To try and correct the problem they have told him 'NO!' firmly, tried a water squirt bottle, and were also told to grasp him around the nose and push it down to the floor when he does it.
None of it has helped

ANY advice/suggestions would really be appreciated!!!
PS- I should add that he is very strong-willed (more than normal I believe)

You may want to try spraying him with a water bottle when he nips. It is nicer and usually more affective than spanking or "time out". Good luck!

The most effective way to teach a puppy not to nip is to yell Ouch and turn your back on him and stop play. Do not ingage in play again for a few minutes. Repeat as many times as necessary. Pup should catch on within a week or two at most. You have to be consistent though. No nipping anytime!! Some people think it is ok to nip if it is done softly. This sends mixed signals to the dog.

Puppies want to play nonstop. If you take that away for inappropriate behavior it will force them to figure out what is causing the stoppage of play.

Thanks for the advice you two! I will pass this on to my parents.
I posted some pics a few weeks ago under 'new GR puppy!' in dog general...............but need to post some more that I took more recently because he is growing so FAST! I am just shocked at how big he is already. I see him about once a week and he gets noticably bigger each time I think he is going to be a larger than normal Golden.

Candy is very right on this one. Presley my lab was a big on biting and chewing on us. We would yelp like she would if she got hurt.. It didn't take long about 5 times and she stopped for a good long while. She started again about 2 months ago and we yelped good and hard and she stopped again. I read in a book to keep doing it and be more dramatic about it (make it sound like he is really hurting you badly if need be).
I found with Presley though i would do it when she would nip and stuff but when she really hurt me i was too shocked to yelp lol.... I am glad she got the idea though.

Sammy seems to be doing better. My Mom started the yelping/ouch! thing last week and he does not do it nearly as much Also, a dog trainer came to the house and she puts her hand all the way in his mouth and says "gentle....gentle.....good gentle Sammy!" I'm not sure why, but it seems to calm him down about it too.

I remember when Draker was 5 months old, he would chew on my arms and elbows. I would be black and blue. One of my professors was concerned and wanted to know if my boyfriend was abusing me! I told him it was my Dog and he just laughed. I was his chew toy even though he had a dozen other toys to chew on!

Yorkster, the chewing on mommy finally stopped when our trainer told me to put my hand all the way in his mouth too. That worked quickly!

I wonder what it is about putting your hand all the way in that works?
I'm curious, and hope Carrie or Dixie can answer.
