    Chipper + Cat Food = Ick! Ick! Ick!

    Update post #337

    Not sure if it was the little bit of turkey he got on Thanksgiving or the stress of traveling 5 hours to Toronto (despite him sleeping the entire way) or a mix of both or something unknown, but Chipper is not well.

    Friday morning he had soft stool which worsened to full blown diareha and also vomiting frothy bile. When he had nothing left to poop out, he'd pretty much defecate blood.

    He won't eat anything but he is drinking water. We picked up some pedialyte in hopes to get some electolytes into him and we'll try some bland rice later.

    Fingers crossed.

    He does not look well.

    If we can't get him to eat anything by Monday he'll be off to the vets.

    * Alergic to Turkey ??

    * Picked up a *bug* in the Canadian WATER ??

    * Could he be suffering from Bloat / Twisted Stomach / Gastric Dilatation ??

    Bloat seems unlikely IF he is able to actually "throw up" - but I'm not sure I'd want to
    wait till Monday if he hasn't shown some improvement by tomorrow.

    Routine Upset Tummy remedy is NO food for 24 hours;
    then try rice + boiled chicken or rice + WELL-cooked hamburger.

    FEEL BETTER SOON, Chipper!

    Poultry will give soft bowel if they are not use to it, and turkey more so. Your idea of pedialyte is a good one, and I agree- if not better to the vets.
    Meanwhile- withhold breakfast to allow the stomach to clear out, then half rations the dinner feeding. "Frothy bile" is gas in the stomach. If you are sure he didnt get a bone, then I would say this will clear it.

    My vet once told me she sees a LOT of diarrhea after thanksgiving. And TURKEY is the cause. So hoping that is all it is, poor boy.

    Hope Chipper's feeling chipper again soon!

    I don't want to worry you, but I wouldn't wait until Monday. I forget, was he in a shelter environment? Around a lot of new dogs? The symptoms sound like parvo. Does the diarrhea have a horrible stench? Worse than 'regular' diarrhea?

    Vomitting, loss of appetite, and bloody diarrhea are tell-tale signs of parvo. *Hopefully* and fingers crossed it's just a little bit of an upset tummy, but I would get him to the vet....

    Hey guys! Great news! He's eating again (just little bites of his normal crunchies) and is back in chipper spirits. He's been playing with his toys and Kia but we're making sure he doesn't over do it.

    We're still in Toronto btw so there was no way to get him to our vet (besides the fact she's gone on vacation)- I did talk to the vet staff on Saturday though and they talked me through the steps to take.

    Last night was really rough. He refused the pedialyte and the cooked rice. We tried force feeding the rice to no avail. He was stressing out so we left him be. Even though the package said not too, we ended up diluting the pedialyte and he did take a few sips. We left a handfull of crunchies and rice in his crate with him overnight in the hopes he'd want some.

    At 7 a.m. he woke us to the sounds of him sucking down the diluted pedialyte. I took him outside where he peed but there was no diarreha or vomit to be had. Yay! Upon coming back inside, he went over to Andy, gave him kisses, then went to the food bowl and started eating the crunchies!!

    He then grabbed his toys and wanted to play tug. Then he initiated play with Kia. And it's been that way all morning.

    I really think the turkey is what did a number on him. No people food ever again.... or at least for a real long time.

    I'm not concerned about Parvo. He received a clean bill of health at the vets last Monday and his stool sample showed nothing wrong.

    We'll be keeping an eye on him though. We also plan to make more stops on the way home so he can stretch his legs and get some fresh air.

    Thanks so much for the PT prayers. They did wonders. We were really scared for a out little boy for a second there.

    Actually... I got to go....they are running through the house like banshees at the moment...

    Glad to hear that Chipper is feeling better.

    A friend of mine who is a vet tech has said a few times that Turkey actually isn't good for dogs because of something in it...kind of makes you wonder why they make turkey dog treats huh?
    Goonies never say die!

    Thanks Amy for the great sig!
