    Question Jumping!

I have a problem My 1 year old lab mix jumps on everyone who comes in the door. he gets really excited. How to I get him to stop jumping on people as soon as they come through the door? heres somethings I have tryed puting my knee up so he does not jump, Holding him back as he pretty much drags me across the floor. I don't have a kennel for him I can put him in and hes never been in one before. any outher ideas would be varry helpfull.

    *Thanks*

We have the same with our two hounds but we are now training them to "sit" whenever we tell them to. If you do this when visitors arrive and only give them treats when they obey you should be able to solve this gradually. If you can get your visitors to command them to sit as well it should dawn on them that they only get nice things if they sit down and behave.

Also, do you put his lead on him before answering the door - that might give you a bit more control

This will take a while because it is a hard habit to break from when they were little and cute!

I some how lucked out and have 2 pups that don't jump! I don't know how it happened!
But my friend has a 150+lb wolfdog that used to jump up on you. She trained him to sit in order to get any attention, and it worked perfectly!!
I'd keep him on a leash and have people (with treats) walk in your house and tell him to sit and give him a treat. Give him a correction if he goes to jump.

What I do is give my Rita (my puppy who also jumps on just about everyone) is knee in the chest. It will push her down, and sooner or later she will learn not to jump up.

    Same Problem!!

I have the same problem, i knee coco EVERYTIME she jumps up on me, but all she does is walk backwards on her hind legs and wags her tail even faster because she thinks your playing! I even scold her when she does it, but still no use, she still thinks your playing! I am anxiously awaiting as to what people say to this thread!

with my dogs and the dogs at the shelter where I volunteer I just put my knee up so they don't jump up and say "off". It doesn't hurt them at all. there is this one dog at the shelter where I volunteer named Slate that jumps up no matter what you do, lol. I think he is learning, though.

The way I got my Husky,Thor,to stop jumping is to totally Ignore him. I had family and friends come over and they would pretend like he wasn't even there(Which is really hard to do!) When he would finally settle down and behave They would pet him and give him a treat. After about two weeks he finally got the picture!

Okay this is what I use. My guys are huge, and jumping would easily place them over someones head.
I take the palms of my hands and when the dog is facing you, block his eye sight about a foot off his head. You are not moving quickly like a slap ( who would hit a dog anyway...) its like a block. The dog in order to see you, has to take a step back and regroup and when he does, praise in a low calm voice like " goooood boy" reallllllllly quiet in your voice with no energy. ONce this is taught. go stand at the door- your dog will get excited expecting you to open the door- do the same thing, once this is done, have someone ring the door bell but do not open the door until you get calm from your dog..
Now be consistant in this. Do not let the dog jump up on you during this process until he gets it, and even then its only a obvious invitation like patting your chest and calling the dog..
Also use a word like " off" not "get down" or "down". Down is down, off is off..
