    Question about Bettas

We have had Otto for almost two years now and he is doing fine. I just love to talk with him and have him swish his tail, especially when we are getting ready to feed him.

BUT......when Helen was doing the weekly cleaning of his water over the weekend, we both noticed that his top fin is gone. Completely gone. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it and is still swimming happily in his bowl, but it makes me worry that we are missing something.

    Any ideas or thoughts?

Well, we don't have a filter, as Otto lives in a bowl, but he might have fin rot, ick or something like that, or he might just be getting old. I hope that he will be ok for a long, long time.

    It might be finrot.

Doy ou have any plastic plants? He may have cut himself on that or if you have a sharp decoration. Do you have live plants or other fish with Otto? If not then add about 1 teaspoon of AQUARIUM SALT.

Sounds like finrot. A few of my bettas had that recently. I started with Maracyn Plus, an antibiotic and then went to aquarium salt and Melafix and they are all better.

Yep.. sounds like finrot to me too. Anyway you could get a picture?

If it's finrot, it's incredibly easy to treat.. just keeping the water extra clean and a bit of aquarium salt with water changes will help his fins heal. You can also use something like melafix or bettafix (a diluted, safer version of melafix for bettas).

Thanks, you guys, for your responses. We will check into the aquarium salts...sounds like we need to do that.

I gotta a betta too. And honestly, I'm not quite sure on how to make his habitat of his worth living. So I am just learning more from this forum so far. Now I know where I should be heading to if I have questions about my pet too...
