We adore those ducks! We had a very friendly old one that used to come around that we affectionately called "Duckus". He's not been around in a long while, but we have a nice little female (we call her "mamma duck") who has four adorable ducklings. They sleep in our bushes, eat under the feeders and swim in our pool. It's been wonderful to watch them grow and learn all they need to know from their mamma. When Jake has her ducklings you may have to back off a bit for a while. Mother ducks are very protective of their young. Don't take it personally though, because it's simply instinct. Congratulations to Jak(i)e for being POTD!

Several years ago a female duck laid 12 eggs right by my front door. We live in a development that boarders a farm which has ducks, chickens, geese. This duck whom I named Mommy Duck laid her eggs and then they hatched sometime in April. My daughter and I spent all summer with these baby ducks. Mommy Duck was wonderful as a mom. As the ducks got older she would walk them a little further everyday into the develpment, all the people in the develpment got to meet me because of this, I was known as the duck lady. At night just as the sun went down Mommy Duck and her little ones would come waddling back to sleep underneath the bush by my front door. She would come when I called her as well, having traveled 9 or 10 houses away with her babies. People loved seeing those little babies, 6 yellow, 6 black. Mommy in front babies single file in back. As Mommy explored with her babies one or two would get lost, twice they fell into sewer holes and my husband had to climb down and rescue them. As they started to get bigger they became more work, I purchased a large plastic container for them to swim in and of course food. One night a bad storm was approching and I got them all into the garage, the next morning my garage was full of duck poop. It was time to go to the farmer and have her get her ducks which they did. For my daughter and myself it had been a magical ducky summer, one we will never forget. So seeing your beautiful Jake made me smile all the more. Ducks do make wonderful pets on a farm and it looks like Jake is having a blast. How brave of you to grab that snake. I hope Jake's eggs hatch and you can experince the joy of ducky babies, cuter then cute. Wishing you and Jake all the best, Marigold

Hey, you don't know how much all of your kind words mena to me. Jake's eggs did hatch, only one of them though. They hatched a few months ago, and only one made it. All the other eggs got cracked or some little animal got them in the middle of the night.

She was so proud of her little baby. She would let us walk up to her and her baby and pet them both. Her little baby that we ended up naming 'JRose' was very sweet, and trusted us since his momma Jake taught him not to be afraid of us.

I'm glad you all enjoyed seeing Jake's picture. What you all said really means a lot to me.

Jake was my favorite duck I've ever had. She also had a sister. Topaz (Jake's sister) got killed by a dog in June, and Jake got so depressed after that. I was so excited and proud at the same time to see Jake on pet of the day!! I went outside and told her "Your on pet of the day, Jake!!!" She looked up at me like 'ok........' she was so precious.

She loved the water, and al
wyas kept her feathers so nice and pretty, but after Topaz left she quit cleaning herself. She wouldn't ever get in the pool unless we put her in it, and on hot days we would pick her up and carry her to the pool to cool off.

She died on September 18, 2006. I miss her so much...she was so special to me.

Thanks everyone for your kind words...

I'm sorry to hear of Jake's passing. May it be of some comfort to you, Genny, that she and Topaz are now reunited at the Rainbow Bridge, and Jake is again grooming herself and feeling fit as a fiddle! She had the good fortune of realizing a loving home which you provided while she was here on earth, and she knew the joys of motherhood with her precious JRose.

Thank-you so much Avajoy. I, too, am so glad that Jake got to be a mother, and see what it was like. I still have her precious baby boy JRose, and he looks a lot like his mother, but he acts just like his father

Here is a picture of JRose.

And, here is a picture of JRose's father. I think JRose looks more like Jake, though.
