Anyone know what kind of bug this is? grasshopper?

I've seen a few of these guys around the past week or so. I've never seen them before and can not find anything about them on the net.

The legs look almost grasshopper like but are much skinnier (this one is missing one of his hind legs).
The shape of his head is a lot like a grasshopper head.
His body is almost shaped like a fish, and his skin has "scale" like designs on it, looking like fish scales.
He has a wierd curved "tail", not pointy though. It is not visable in these pics as his huge wings hide it, his "tail" is approx. 3/4 of an inch long.

The ones I have seen have all been decent sized, about 4-5 inches long, and the tallest spot is where the wings are, which is about 2 inches tall not including the legs. He was just a little smaller in the pictures than what he is in real life, except his height is taller than what it appears in the pics. Making the pictures "almost" life size (on my screen anyways).

    "Katy Did"

    Katy Didn't"

Which , resembles the sound that they make!!!

Yes, you got the link right. It says there are over 4000 species of katydid's. Now that I know what it was I can look them up, although I have yet to find a pic on the net that looks exactly like the ones I have seen, the pics I have found are all similar.

The last pic in this link looks just like the ones I have seen, except the ones I see have larger wings. But you can see the "tail" in that pic.

yuppie, a katydid piece, for sure! at a fast glance, it looked like a grasshopper because of hindhoppers but grasshoppers can be distinguished by their much shorter antennae and are often more colorful than katydid nymphs are.

    grasshopper's short antennae

    katydid's long ones

yours are waay long, so it's part of arde-katydid family. did you see it hopped? or at all? I know, one hind leg but nature do amaze us too!

I did see one hop/jump only once though after watching it ALL day. lol It wasn't as high or as long of a jump as a grasshopper but he also jumped onto something. Maybe if her tried harder he could jump further???

I have to share this picture I took a few weeks ago. It's an Eastern lubber grasshopper. They're really big and they're all over the place.
