What a beautiful big boy! We're fortunate to live in an area where we get to see these beautiful creatures roaming free. We have at least 5 of them in our back yard as of lately. None of them are as large as Gijs, but usually when they get that large, others will call the wildlife rehab to come take them away. They are a feral species here and people don't like them eating their vegetation.
It's unfortunate that people also feel threatened by these creatures, as they won't attack unless they are provoked. Unfortunately, there is no place (legal) to place these creatures back into the wild, and finding people with the means to take on the large ones is rare. We fostered a few of them over the past couple of years - until we moved and could not set up a pen at our new place.
The fosters were Gijs size. One of them was very tame, who we called "Big Daddy" and he stayed indoors with us through a couple of hurricanes. One of them had been shot up with a BB gun, which was pretty sad. Those creatures have all found refuge in an Everglades park now. They really are neat to observe roaming freely.
Congratulations for Gijs being POTD!!
