    Moxy's cry

My cat is a siamese I adopted her from a shelter. When she cries you can barely hear anything...is this normal?

I would say that is probably normal for her. I have a cat that barely makes a sound when she meows, just a light squeak, but if she if frightened or one of my other cats jumps her she can let out a loud meow. It startled me the first time she did it because I had no clue she was able to get that loud.

My father's cat just squeaks too.

Welcome to Pet Talk and congratulations on your new kitty. Hope to hear more about her and possibly see pictures. We love pictures here.

The shelters here give you a certificate for a free vet check when you adopt a cat from them, did you get one? If your cat is eating and drinking well, acting curious about her new surroundings, she's probably fine and the muted meow is simply her way. However, if you have a free vet visit, it will make you feel better for a vet to say there is no problem. How long ago did you adopt her? She may be keeping a low voice while she gets used to her home.

Is she full Siamese or a cross with another breed? You do expect that breed to be very vocal - perhaps you should be glad that she does have a small meow since a Siamese talker can drive people out of a room! My Siamese, adopted from a shelter when she was already in her teens, just went through radioactive iodine treatment for an over-active thyroid and I'm sure that her meow is now much deeper, which worries me a lot even though she's fine in every other way. However, I just can't remember her old meow with any certainty, so I'm trying not to worry about it. Anything other than the usual meow does bother cat owners particularly since cats are notorious for not showing they are sick until they are ready to fall over.

Anyway, congratulations on adopting Moxie and I hope you both have many fun years together.

I foster Siamese for Siamese Rescue (Virginia center)

Although notoriously vocal, some Meezers don't have much of a voice at all.
I just had a petitie, Balinese girl, with a huge low voice.
And I've had big ole males who barely squeak.

if she is otherwise acting o.k. and eating, this maybe just her.

The Meezer choir needs all vocal ranges.

    Thanks for the reply

This is "GOGO" we got her when she was a kitten from a neighbor when she found out that our first cat was put to sleep.

This is Samantha.."sammy"...we got her from a shelter when she was a kitten, the story behind her was that the people from the shelter found her and her brothers and sisters in a trash dumpster..."sammy" was the last to be adopted..we got her about a month after "GOGO"

and this is "MOXY"...I adopted her when she was a kitten...they told me she was a seal point...she never really cried much...so when I took her for her Vet. appointment I didnt bring it up...but when I take her back I'll ask...we got her back in January of this Year

I am very familiar with Siamese cats our first one was, we had her for 16 years, untill I had to put her down due to health issues...Thanks everyone for your reply...

You have some lovely cats there.

My cat has a very loud meow and an almost silent purr, I think you'll find that every cat is different.

Precious is Siamese and hardly makes a sound too.
Some Siamese are just quiet, especially if like Precious they are small.
Actually Rocca is very quiet too.
I wouldnt worry, maybe its her nature to be silent.
