Both pictures were taken at approximately the same spot. This is the lake behind my house.

This is what it looked like in late March. Frozen solid. The last time I ran a the dog team across the ice was around April 10.

This is what it looked like yesterday from the seat of my kayak! The governement classifies it as a dead lake as it doesn't support fish. Clearly they've never looked any closer. It's brimming with life. I saw dozens of water fowl yesterday, mostly in what appeared to be mated pairs, and there are four active beaver lodges on the lake now.

I was wondering the same thing as Kimmy.

There must be fish in it for the birds & beavers to survive you would think. If not I wonder if fish were re-introduced to it if they could survive??? Oh well, I think I'd rather have it be listed as a "dead lake" if it means you get it all to yourself!

They could try, but they won't have any luck. Occasionally, I see young boys casting on the shore. It's too shallow for fish. Apparently the gov't tried to stock it a few years ago and the fish didn't survive the winter. At it's deepest it's probably only 8 feet and it freezes pretty much solid in the winter.

It's full of weeds and small bugs and such that support the birds. The beavers are destroying the poplar forest near the lake--which thrills me since I really like beavers and I'm violently allergic to the fuzz poplar trees drop!

Ah, it already has a name. Mary Lake, although I have no idea how it got that name!

I have a friend who goes by Tami too--same spelling and everything! My Mom would never let me answer anyone who shortened my name. I don't even recognize that any variation of Tammy could be me! You could call me that all day and I won't connect that you are talking to me! My sister's name is Patricia and she's the same way--Pat, Trish, ect don't connect for her as her name at all!

I'd known her as Tami for several years when I *conned* her into being
a Volunteer Fire Department Radio Dispatcher and had to fill out "paperwork".

I filled in "Tami" and she corrected me: "It's Tamara".
I told her she didn't "act" like a Tamara - that Tami "fit better"!

Neither actually! Pronounced Tam-air-uh..Just to further complicate things, my parents let my ticked of 10 year old brother name me and he decided to not give me a middle name! My full first name is TamaraLyn--one word, no hyphen, capital L in the middle!

I think the water is fine--a little grungy and cold for swimming, but it does seem to grow weeds and water bugs well! The birds certainly look well fed and the beavers have successful litters every spring! The lake is a closed system--it's not fed by a river or anything. If there was some moving water it might support fish better.

WHAT do the Beavers do for entertainment??

I was always taught that Beavers HAD to have "running water" in their lakes -
to give them a "Project" to work on ... to *stop* the moving water.
