I want a bird but I need help.

I want a bird. I have no oppositions to heavy cleaning. I want a hearty bird that can withstand my first timer-ness. The only problem is I wouldn't know what bird to get. What do you suggest? I have very little experience with birds. Right now, the most I've done is rescued and helped out hummingbirds and sparrows from cats and dogs. Also, I know a tad about peafowl as my FIL has five. Preferably something small to start out with! I have no preference as far as colour goes. I would like something a little friendlier. Suggestions?

Well I don't really know what the pros and cons are of the differing places to get them. I don't think I want a wild one. I would like one that is pretty tame as far as birdie standards go. I would like to be able to interact with it. My knowledge of birds is very limited so I don't know really what I am looking at here.
