    How Many Artists?

    Reposted from Town Hall:

    Greetings PT'ers,

I've noticed on a number of posts and while viewing Public Profiles that we seem to have a LOT of artists (Commercial Artists, Photographers, Painters, Jewelry Makers, etc.) as members. Just wondering who all is a member of this Guild.

Give us your name, home and a sample of your artwork (if you have one readily available). I will start by adding my name:

    Dan Yazvac, Pittsburgh PA
    Commercial Artist, Retoucher
Sample Coming (I am sooo bad, all the artwork I've done and you would think I would have some scanned in??? - if interested you can see some of my retouching at www.daygraphics.net)

I don't have the green one anylonger. I had to make a tough choice & had to toss out all but 1 of my ceramic dragons. I only kept the yellow one.

    Scanner Type?

It would be helpful to know your scanner make and model, but just off the top of my head there a some generic settings to most desktop scanner models. First you want to check to see if you have any default unshrap masking settings active (usually there are) and turn them OFF. Secondly, try scanning at a much lower resolution or magnification - or both. Some scanner interfaces don't show these choice at the Basic Settings Menu but can be arbitrarily set at the Advanced Settings Menu. try a combination of settings that will give you approximately a 1024 x 768 pixel file. This will be different each time depending upon your original art size and desired resolution.

For instance, an 8 x 10" art piece scanned at 100 pixels per inch and 100% magnification will be a 800 x 1000 pixel file. A 4 x 5" drawing at 200 ppi at 100% is the same. Or you could keep the res at 100 ppi and scale at 200%!!!

Nice work by the way - both of you!!

    A Couple Of Older Works

    OK,

I scanned in a couple of pieces lying about the house. I really don't do much original artwork anymore - mostly computer work these days. Maybe when I retire I'll take up painting again.

I started this painting of my wife and her stepsister about 8 years ago - never did finish!

Did a charity event a few years back for Mr. Rogers and Mr. McFeeley!

I really have done some more recent ones, but I can't find originals for the life of me. Once I get paid, I just kinda move on. Oh well, let's see some others from the artists out there!

I have done lots of neat drawings of dogs, but for some reason, they don't scan good. I will post a few good pics of Ellie I have gotten, because I like to draw and take pictures. I will try scanning my drawings again sometime soon. Here's a few photos of Ellie that I have taken....

Ugh, I've been going thru files and files trying to find photos to post as example for this thread. Each one I really liked and thought of as good when I first took it, then I look back and I'm second guessing myself.

A lot of people urge me to get into the photography business. I'd really like to.. I don't know where to start, how to get myself known, etc.

I take pictures, draw, paint, make graphics, write, create jewlery, sculpt, scrapbook/collage, many "artistic" things. Wether or not I'm good in all of those subjects, I dunno, but I do enjoy them.

Kay, you're one of most talented photographers I've ever known - and remember, I have a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) from Mass Art, and have worked in publishing and graphic art. And Paul agrees with my assessment of your talent. If you want, I can give you advice on how to build your photography business.

I am an artist and graphic designer. I majored in Illustration in college, which was part of the Graphic Design department. All the graphics on the Pet of the Day family of websites are an example. Here's another - it is last year's Christmas card, whose subject you all know well, Miss Hoppy!

I've had a website for Pet Portrait commissions since I was around 15 or 16 (almost 22 now). My website is pathetic, I've been meaning to redo it, but it's in my signature. Here's a link with some of my artwork. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v14/wolf_Q/

I also really enjoy photography of animals and nature, whether I'm that good or not I don't know, but I love it.

    Here's my info
Amy Quarnberg, Utah...I don't have a "title" as I don't have a degree or a real job in art, though I wish I did.

    And some examples

*Edit* photobucket is not working well for me I'll come back and add more later

Thanks Karen, feel free to PM me any advice you have. I'd love to know.

I have to add my favorite pieces Amy has done.... all three are hanging in my home.

Need to get her to do a new one of my three.

    Hi Amy,
Thanks for posting. Your stuff is really good with a polished technique as well. You don't always have to be classically trained or possess a degree in something to be inherently talented. I've seen many degreed artists who wish their rendering abilities were as good as yours!!!

And Catnapper, loved your stuff as well - very good rendering abilities.

Karen - you are also an artist??? Who knew? Liked your bunny illustration!!!

It seems like a lot of animal lovers are also artists/musicians - sensitive types!!!
