my 90 lb rescue Shepherd mix is terrified to go outside
I read some other posts on this site about this issue. Here's what my problem is: I rescued this dog when he was 4 months old (he will be 6 years in Dec).I brought him home to an 8 year old Chocolate Lab that was sweetest baby girl (had no issues with her). First 2 months I had him he was a happy boy, inside and outside for. At 6 months old it was like someone flipped a switch, he flat out refused to go outside (backyard, which is fenced in or front yard). I had to drag him out the door many times just to get him to do his business and half the time he would just sit down (if on leash) or run to the back door and jump up on the door and the house (I have scratches on my door and my siding). At the time I had a friend come to the house every day to let my dogs out and she never told me that anything odd happened to him. I went to take him out on Saturday (I worked Monday - Friday outside the house) and he would NOT go outside. I tried treats, he won't take them outside, I tried training him at the front door and he got up and turned his back on me and laid down. He also became increasingly aggressive toward everyone but me, particularly toward my husband whenever he approached me and the dog was near me (he is always at my side) he would growl at him and it would escalate quickly. He would sleep in the bedroom with me, on the floor, so did my Chocolate Lab and when my husband came into the bedroom to go to sleep the Shepherd would growl, bark and act aggressively toward him. He even bit my husband's hand when he reached into the room to close the bedroom door. I had a trainer come to the house for 7 sessions of 1 on 1 training and also took him to group training away from my house (which he did great at).
I began his training on July 9th and continued for 90 days (Hurricane Sandy caused me to stop for awhile). For 1 hour every day I would put him on leash, take him out in front of the house and do his leash training. Walked up and down the sidewalk doing Heal training, bought a box to put him on and did Place training, practiced Sit, Stay, Come, Wait, Place every day for 90 days. He is trained to all commands and listens and performs beautifully although he is better in the house than outside BUT he does listen and behave outside. He is terrified of noises, especially children yelling and playing. I bought a shock collar from the trainer and have used it on him during his training. He gets into such a hyper state of Anxiety that the collar doesn't phase him at times and he drags me down the sidewalk. I had a stress fracture of the knee from him pulling on me and I still trained him every day. My husband has little to do with the dogs training and the dog acts entirely different with him when I am out of the house he doesn't interact with him at all. This has been going on for 5 1/2 years and everyday I struggle to get this dog outside to do his business. I've consulted other trainers and they all say I've done the training with him I have to keep doing it. Any suggestions would be welcomed although I have tried everything except moving to another house. He is not as fearful at other people's homes although he has become more aggressive toward others when at their homes. There are only 3 people that can come into my house that he doesn't get away with this behavior. I LOVE this dog and putting him down or rehoming is NOT an option!
People have actually suggested both.
