Miner's Memorial to be Protested???

In local news . . .

I am so angry . . . outraged . . . after just hearing about this group . . . a "so called church" . . . is preparing to travel to West Virginia . . . a BEAUTIFUL State . . . to protest the memorial of the lost miners of the Sago Mine Explosion.

I am apalled.

This is their "news release" . . . I warn you, it's HORRIBLE.

News Release

I've read on a few different blogs & news articles that this group has also protested memorials of 911 victims and also soldiers that have been killed in Iraq.

These people are deranged.

I only hope that this doesn't get more press than the miner's memorial service does.

I hope no press for it .aldso hope the local law enforcement keeps them away like the press after the goof up on the news.

There are always groups that are willing to exploit any situation to their own purposes. The best we can do is ignore them entirely.

It was the press listening in on a closed conversation and drew the wrong conclutions and ran to beat the others and it snowballed from there.

I can't believe that! No memorial for the poor souls from the mine, as well as the victims of 9/11?! Outrageous, but Karen is right. the best we can do is ignore them, therefore we won't be feeding into them.

It wasn't the news media's fault. It was the stupid suits at the mining company who, after finding out the miners were not alive, failed to alert the media until after they went to press.

I am a harsh critic of the news media, having worked for a newspaper. But they are not to be blamed in this instance.

As far as those idiot protestors are concerned, I hope they get NO media attention whatsoever so the families can grieve in peace.

I listened to a radio interview with one of the execs from the corp. They were upset with the release of false info that the miners were alive (as Corinna said, the media was listening in on the communications and ran with a story from a garbled transmission rather than get confirmation), but could not see any tactful way to correct the information until the were absolutely certain of what was going on. They admit they blew it, but are arguing (IMHO correctly) that the media blew it by running with an unconfirmed source.

The twits who are protesting the funerals have changed tacks to other than military funerals as there is a group of bikers who have organized to block their protests at military funerals.

I find that bikers number many veterans, and those who support the military. Have you ever seen Rolling Thunder in DC on Memorial Day?

I think it's awful that people use sensitive situations like this to push their agendas.

Ugh I hate groups like this one - they make Christians look bad. They obviously don't read the WHOLE bible, because they got the wrong message and are actually sinning against God because they are judging others. The verses they quoted are completely taken out of context, and they don't know God very well. In addition, it is obvious that they hae never read the New Testament. I am so angry that they portray God this way...

They're all ignorant trash as far as I'm concerned. I haven't heard or seen anything about this so I'm thinking (and hoping) the media didn't pick this up on the wire.

One thing that I worry about is these morons goading someone to "take action" against them-trust me, as stupid as these people are, there is someone out there that is stupider, that really takes exception to their protests and will have no qualms about running a car into their group, doing a drive by or pulling some other stunt.

Then you will see all the ACLU lawyers coming out of the landfills looking for "freedom of speech" rights for these bozos....

Panel Endorses Protest Restrictions At Funerals

Protests by an anti-gay group at military funerals prompted a legislative panel on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would make disorderly conduct a felony if it occurs within 500 feet of funerals or memorial services.

Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, filed the bill in response to a protest at the Aug. 28 funeral for Army Staff Sgt. Jeremy Doyle, an Indianapolis native killed in Iraq.

Six members of the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church dragged U.S. flags on the ground and shouted insults at Doyle's surviving family members outside a mortuary in Martinsville, 30 miles southwest of Indianapolis. They have conducted similar protests at other funerals in Indiana and other states.

The Rev. Fred Phelps, the church's founder, contends American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws.

Nobody testified against the legislation at Tuesday's committee hearing, where the bill was endorsed unanimously and sent to the full Senate. Steele said people could still protest funerals, but not in a "fighting or tumultuous manner" within 500 feet of them, funeral processions, burials or memorial services.

Protesters Expected To Crash Military Funeral

Funeral services will be held Tuesday in Evansville for a soldier who was killed in Iraq.

Pvt. Jonathan Pfender, 22, was killed by an improvised explosive device during a patrol on Dec. 30. Pfender was with the 101st Airborne Division.

Police said they will restrict access to the funeral, the funeral procession and the burial because protesters are expected to be on hand.

They expect 12 to 20 anti-gay protesters from a Topeka, Kan., church.

Police said they won't tolerate any illegal activity.

As I had mentioned in one of the other threads, my family is from the Buckhannon area.

My grandmother passed away last Saturday and my mom, dad, and sister went back for the funeral (I was too sick to travel :( ). One of my mom's best friends from high school is married to the Sheriff...

He stated that he was ready for things to get back to normal; this group is continuing to stir stuff up. Apparently, the group "tailgates" tragic events such as this, provokes the locals into action (retailiation), then turns around and sues those they've provoked. Nice. Real friggin, nice. :rolleyes:
