Spike is in the hospital
Poor Spikey...yesterday when I was feeding I noticed he just didn't seem right. When the vet opened at 8:00 a.m. Kevin rushed him down (thank goodness they take us anytime we show up). Anyway Spike's bladder was extremely enlarged and blocked. The vet said he was amazed we even caught this cause most don't until the bladder bursts (I know my cats :D ) He called yesterday afternoon and said when they put a catheter in his urine was full of blood. They found no stones or crystals and said he is doing fairly well. He will be there through part of next week. They have him on antibiotics and still on a catheter. Once they remove it they want to watch him for a few days to make sure he goes on his own. Here's Spike since I don't give him near enough exposure here.

I've seen two or three cats go through this at work . One had to ... become a girl!
I'm really glad you spotted this in time. I'll be thinking of him for a speedy recovery!

I lost my wonderful RB Sambo to that. I hope Spikey gets better soon and this is the one and only time he has this problem.

We are Praying for Spike to be well soon.

Oh Spike, I am glad your mom noticed quickly that something was wrong. Get well soon, Spikey!
-
Poor Spike we do hope you get well soon. You look like a little lover. I hope your baby gets well soon. Here are tons of hugs from Northern Wisconsin ((Hugs)) :)
-
Ouch, poor Spike, it must have been painful. :( I'm glad you noticed and got him to the vet. I hope the antibiotics will help and he'll be better soon.
Fister can certainly sympathise and sends headbumpies.
-
Hope Spike is feeling better today. It's so hard to see them not at their best. Boy when Spike stretchs he is a big boy :)
-
Poor Spike! I hope you are feeling much better, sweet boy. That must have been dreadfully painful. Glad you received immediate attention.
You are a handsome guy!!!
-
Lisa, Spike is beautiful ... looks so much like the foster I had named Griffin!
Anyway, I am so glad you caught his problem in time. He must have been soooooooo uncomfortable, and what a relief when they catheterized him!!! Poor sweet boy, I hope he gets all better soon.

Spike, although you are not the happiest kitty right now, be a good boy at the vet, and get well soon!!! Prayers coming your way(and to your parents)!
-
I'm sorry to hear about Spike. I'll be sending prayers for a speedy recovery.

Spike is in the hospital
Many prayers are now being prayed for your poor Spike. Hopefully your quick response will keep his situation from becoming serious and Spike will be good as new in no time at all. Please let us know how he's doing?
-
Such a sweet looking boy. Sending lots of love and hugs and prayers and good thoughts for a speedy recovery.
-
Handsome Spike! Don't be worrying your purrents like that.
You know, when Rutherford blocked recently, that was when I found out that most blockages are NOT from stones/crystals, but rather mucus plugs (etc.)
So what will you need to do to try to prevent this from happening again? Did they say?
Prayers for a speedy recovery.
-
Poor Spike. :( I'm glad that you noticed this as soon as you did. I hope he'll feel better soon and recover quickly. Please continue to keep us updated about him and take care.
-
Spike was a bad boy at the vet (reason he's named Spike). He pulled his catheter out Saturday night and the vets found him this way Sunday morning. Luckily he did pee on his own during this time. They decided to leave it out to see if he continues to go on his own. Otherwise he's doing much better. :)
-
OY! Naughty boy!!! Glad he could pee on his own, though. Maybe he was thinking "HEY! I gotta pee! How am I going to do that with this THING in me??" ;)
-
Ha! Guess Spike figures he didn't need that anymore and just yanked it right out! Ha! Good going Spike, you had to go potty and that was in your way! I am glad to hear he is doing better and "going" on his own.
-
Oh Lisa, I am so sorry to hear he's blocked. I am currently going through my own blocking trauma here with Pouncer. I'll keep Spike in my thoughts and prayers today... thought it sounds as if he's back to his old self!
PS: Isn't it great knowing you KNOW your cats? (((hugs)))
-
My Max had the very same problem and exact symptoms you described a couple of years ago. He spent 6 days being an in patient before things righted themself. Thankfully no recurrence since but I do ask him persistently to 'let me know if the pee pees are hurting'. here's hoping for a speedy recovery for poor Spike and we wish him well, poor, poor boy :(
-
Nawtee Spike. Maybe he'll recover faster than everyone thought. :) Lots more prayers and positive thoughts are being sent his way for a full and speedy recovery.
-
I'm glad to hear that Spike is doing better already, and that he could pee on his own, without the catheter!
A speedy recovery to him!
Kirsten
-
Ahhhh, I don't think Spike was trying to be nawtee at all! He was just trying to prove that he was feeling much better, so he could come home soon!!! ;)
Glad he is doing well!

*Update* Spike will have to remain at the vets at least through tomorrow. Blood work came back with a high kidney count (which can be typical with this problem) so they want to run more blood work tomorrow to make sure it is going back to the normal range. They did say he's eating well and doing well though.
-
Lisa, what a great meowmie you are to know your babies when something isn't quite right with them.
I'm glad to hear that Spike, who is such a handsome fella, is dong much better.
I pray that his kidneys go back to the normal range and that he will be back home with you real soon.
-
Good thing you caught it! I'm glad your kitty Spike is doing so well!
-
Lisa, I'm glad to hear that Spike's doing well and hopefully his blood work will come back within the normal range so he'll be able to come home. More prayers and positive thoughts are being sent his way. Please take care.
-
Oh my goodness Spike, what a hard thing to go through! I'm so glad your meowmie isknows you so well! Wishing you a speedy recovery!!
-
OH SPIKE!!!!
I hope you are better soon!!! Be a good boy at the vets so you can come home......
You are such a CUTIE PIE... {{hugs}} for you Spike!!
-
Kevin went to visit Spike last night after work. He said he's in a collar cause of his IV's. Said Spike gave him head bumpies and started purring. Kevin wished he had his camera, but since he stopped after work he didn't have it on him. I will update you all today and thank you so much for all your get well wishes! :)
-
OH that just makes me wanna cry!!!
GET WELL SOON SPIKE!!!!!
-
Glad to hear that Spike is feeling better. Let's hope he may come home very soon :)
-
Sounds like a classical FLUTD- because of no crystals and stones. I hope Spike boy is better soon. Tigris after his attack last year was fine --ok I knock on wood.
All the best for Spike. I hope his kidney count goes down after the antibiotics kick in.
-
Aww, poor Spike; he's feelin' not so good, and then they put that AWFUL collar on him! Add insult to injury...........hang in there, lil guy! You'll be home soon!
-
*UPDATE*
Spike did not get to come home. :( His blood work still wasn't good, although better. He's also dripping and they're afraid he could be blocking again. :( At least he's in good hands!
-
Lisa, I'm so sorry to hear this :( but at least he's in good hands and can be watched and monitored. Please take care. (((HUGS)))
-
Oh dear, seems like there is alot of this urinary trouble going on around here. I'm so sorry, and I hope that Spike gets all better soon! ;)
