Hello everyone! Our new pup has arrived! Bodie is as precious as they come. We set up his new crate and are trying to get him adjusted to it. I am putting him in there throughout the day for about 10-15 min and then take him out. He is constantly crying and I feel so bad for him! I know this will go away over time - does anyone have any suggestions? Or have an idea how long it should last?
I just got a new Chihuahua puppy and I have been reading books on raising a little pup. It says to ignore the whining by turning up the TV or radio to drown him out. Another option is to throw a can of marbles or coins at the cage everytime he cries. He will get the message. Have fun with your new friend.
Do not throw any thing at them it can cause them to be fearful later. Putting them in the crate wiyth a faviorte toy and just ignore them also telling them NO. Praise them well after the time is over.
Yes, I agree with throwing things at them. When I first got Pandy I had a tin can w/ coins in it and rattled it when I would catch her trying to potty in the house - and now she's scared of noise. Not a good idea. The pup is doing a tad better - we have been ignoring his cries and eventually he falls asleep. I'm hoping by the end of the week this will ease so I too, can get some rest!!
Pandy is super jelous. She won't play w/ him, steals his toys and barks/nips at him. Please tell me that this too will ease and it's just because she's used to being the only one????? Thanks everyone for your help.
the crate is something that you should let your dog get used to slowly dont just put him in and lock the door, put lots of treats in the crate so he associates the crate as a positive thing. the crate is somewere they want to feel safe and secure.as others have mentioned just ignore any unwanted behaviour. hope all goes well.
I got a chihuahua puppy 2 months ago and I know what it's like, we're still dealing with it. She would literally scream without end whenever she is left alone. We tried ignoring it and now the screaming has fizzled into whining but it's not as constant and to keep her quite at night she's crated in my mom's room, a couple of times she even slept alone quietly through the night. So ignoring it does help but it takes so much time and persistence. When you do go to let your puppy out be sure that it's when your puppy is quite and not when he's whining otherwise he will think that the whining got your attention.

When we first had gemma we had a crate and the way we got her used to it was with play , we left it open all day so she could go in and out at will and , to encourage this we would play ball , rolling it into the crate so she would go in and get it , we only ever shut her in for very short times to begin with gradually increasing as she bcame more used to it , and always giving huge amounts of praise when ever she came out even if she'd cried ,try not to get upset or shout and i think befor you know it all will settle down . hope this helps good luck

Sadly to say puppies do that some stop their crying sooner than others. But he will come around, it takes patience of corse, sometimes offering him toys that might get his interest or something to chew on offer different treats but someting like a chew bone that can occupy his attention for hours. Benji is like part of the family we love him dearly. He has never learned to talk but he will immitate sounds or laughing at you little things. And he has heard us say 'no Benji' so much he only hollows back 'ankk' as if his way of saying no.
He plays with lots of energy but we do not leave him unattended more than a minute or when you go back into the room believe it or not theres nothing left of it. And if you talk on the phone or to someone believe it or not he gets louder than you and when you be quiet he will too then look at you I suppose this is attention. But he gets plenty of that.
But his dancing and prancing and setting down watching videos of music with me and tugging at my shirt sleeve till I give him a bite of whatever I am eatting makes up for all of it he is very bonded to me more than anyone he is easy to bond with humans but not other birds. We could use with a little less of his destructive self? Any ideals besides kill the bird?

daisy didn't like her crate either when we first put her in it....but like everyone else said we put alot of treats and her fav toys in there with her and she eventually got used to it.....but when she whined it broke my heart so i would stick my hand in there and pet her a little bit and then slowly move away....that might have taken her longer to like the crate but it helped my heart
I am a sucker. He is still whining - and crying at the top of his little lungs and for a 7 week old pup he doesn't have that big of a bark yet. LOL
It is not working w/ him in the crate at night. I try to play with him to wear him down as much as I can so that he will sleep. I put him in and he whines a little, then falls asleep. As soon as he wakes ( about 2 hours later) he's screaming and I take him out, potty and put him back in. The crying lasts for what seems like forever that's when I give in and then I cave, take him out and sleep with him! As I'm getting ready for work I try to wear him out as much as I can so that he will sleep in the crate while I'm gone. When I put him in and walk out the door, while standing in my driveway I can hear the little guy. Poor thing - I just know he's going to end up with Laringitis (sp?) ahahahahah LOL

I know its hard, very hrad, but if you stick with it, NEVER let him out when he wines it will get better.
7 weeks is still a little young to be seperated from his littermates & mother so try leaving a ticking clock near him.
Geez y'all...a baby is a baby. Place a radio close to his cage and leave it on a station that's easy to listen to - like jazz or classical. He will have "company" such as voices and the music will be soothing to him. Leave him a t-shirt, or other clothing item with your scent on it, to comfort him with additional familiarity. And yes, I know it's hard to do, but you are going to have to ignore him and let him get used to his surroundings. He will learn quickly and you both will be happy.
I just adopted a 12 1/2 week old Border Collie pup.
She cried so much it sounded like you were torturing her.
Here's what I did:
- Her crate is in a room where there is a bit of human activity
- I take her outside right before she goes in her crate
- I cover her crate with a blanket (to prevent whining)
- I leave the radio on quietly so she's not as lonely
If she whines a bunch and doesn't shut up, I slowly creep into the room and growl "QUIET!!!!" at her.
I also immediately take her outside when I take her out of the crate.
I have a 9 week old Golden Reteriver, Charlie he is doing very well except for the past couple of nights he has been peeing in the crate. He doesn't cry so its hard to tell when he will pee.
The crate is in my room and his crate is along side Stewie, he is our year old Golden. Help not sure what do to he goes in the crate no problem.

My husband and I just got a Minitature Australian Shepherd puppy two weeks ago. I can totally empathize with you on the crate training! But we stuck it out now he is sleeping through the night without any accidents at all! He doesn't even cry when he goes in at the beginning. When we started putting him in the crate for the first time we would wait until he was quiet for a while and then took him out of the crate and brought him outside.
A few days after we got Paz I went on to www.leerburg.com They have a lot of great puppy Q&A's and articles! I highly suggest going through it. We found a house training article that helped a lot. Paz is now on a daily schedule with specific times to be in the crate and our kitchen and everything else. It has really helped a lot. I agree that it is really important for your new pup go outside immediatly before putting him in the crate and immediatly afterwards. He'll learn he has a window of oppurtunity to go to the bathroom so he better take it! Paz has learned that anyway! It does take a lot of time to get through all of this though. Paz will sometimes bark or whine when he goes in his crate during the day. But after a little ignoring he stops. If it is really hard to listen to after a little while, leave your house. Even if it is just for a short time. It will give you a nice break from it and he will realize you aren't letting him out because he is crying! Congrats on your new puppy and the best of luck!!! ;)

Eek! Try your best to not let him pee in his crate!! It could be a sign that the crate is too big for him. Put a bunch of toys around where he has peed. They don't like to pee where they sleep or near their possessions. They like to keep clean. Good luck! :)Quote:

I bought ear plugs. ;) Finn's crying didn't bother us at all. I would put my phone alarm on so that it would vibrate and I kept it near me when I slept so that it would go off every two hours...he didn't cry long, because we never went to him while he was whining. I mean, I'd make sure he was safe, but, I wouldn't say much. Good luck...
When he cries, DO NOT baby or coddle him or give him any attention at all. If you do, he'll learn "Oh I want attention or I don't like this situation, if I whine mom won't make me do it anymore!!" so whenever he wants something or attention he'll learn to whine.
So you just need to ignore him, and NOT give any attention and he will learn that its not getting him any attention, so he will stop :)

We have just adopted an 8 week old American Bulldog and we are also using the crate at night and when we are not home. We've had her for almost a week now and she's almost clean already believe it or not and the nights are getting better and better.Quote:

We live in an appartement so we can't have her barking like that... I'm thinking of bringing her to my parents (in a house) since it's really not that far from where I live but i'm afraid it really wont help to put her in a new environment like that..
Any tips?
