There's 2 new danes in the dane rescue

I was at the Great Dane Rescue today walking, playing, feeding, and bathing all the Great Danes today and I noticed 2 new great danes. Both in the same pen, they looked exactly alike, they were both very beautiful harlequins. I looked at the tag on their pen, Sub and Lime were their names, both males, and they came from the same litter, homes could not be found for them, so they were abandoned on the street. It made me groan, so many rescues were like this, but I was sure they would find a home soon. Until I took Sub out of his pin. He growled at me and bit my hand, I nearly dropped him, but just put him back into his pen. What should I do? The boss said they were thinking about putting the dogs to sleep, but I rejected it, he said I was on my own, he dosn't want him in the building with the other dogs, so he told me if I didn't want them to be put to sleep, I'd have to take them on myslef, and bring them home with me the next day, eeek, Sub bit me and what if he bites my dogs? I don't know about Lime, but I'll find out tommorow. So what's your opinoin, put them to sleep, or take them on myself????? I love danes, but I'm not sue about these ones.

How old are the dogs?

could you take him out of the pin and into a yard or something to really evaluate him?
how old are these two?

was it like a "i wanna kill you" bite or like "i have no training or manners so i dont know bite inhibition"?

The dogs are 14 weeks old.

I could barely touch Sub, he'd growl and back away and snarl, so no, I couldn't take them into the yard to evaluate them.

They are young....I'm sure they are both just extremely frightened and scared from being alone on the streets. They may have been abused too. I hope you will not put them down, give them a chance. Maybe just slowly get them used to people again by offering treats and a comforting voice. Let them take their time and come to you, don't force it. I have not personally worked with dogs like this, I'm sure you will get good advice from those who have.

Is there a room, pen, dog run or something you could house them in away from your other dogs for now?

Yes I have a kennel in the yard, it's sheltered with 2 dog houses, I don't use it for my dogs, it just sits there, it's very clean, and confortable, and it's fenced away from the other dogs, but still - I'm worried about myself being hurt by the dogs.

they deserve a chance. Every animal does. Please do not put them down and give them a chance.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I cannot believe someone would put a poll like this. :(

I'm not sure about getting them from the rescue to the kennel without getting injured...maybe a mild sedative to get them into a crate, take the crate home, put the crate in the kennel and open it...let them come out when they wish.

Spend time with them several times a day without actually going in the kennel. Talk to them, offer treats, toys, etc. (through the kennel door or openings if it's chain link). I would think with time (and it may take quite a long time...) they would grow accustomed to you and associate you with good things. Possibly they will start coming up to you for the treats instead of waiting for you to toss them in the kennel. With time they may let you pet them...and the relationship will grow from there. Just hoping, it's worth a try. :)

It is quite sad, I'm sure that since they are puppies they can very well learn to trust people and be very loving dogs.

I agree 110% you don't know what these little angels have gone through. They need to be given a chance. Once they realize you don't mean to harm them they will come around.

I will have to get them tonight if I'm going to get them. So I need some final answers, yes or no, I will need to get them in an hour or so, or leave them. So, what is everyone's answer? Yes Or No? And I'll help you guys with the answer,

Should Sub be put down, and I keep Lime to socalize, or do you guys think I should take on both? I'm asking for everyone's opinion, cause I cannot go with my own. I will need some answer within 20 minutes....:confused:

how old are they? if they are still young, then no way. they obviously need a lot of training, but the younger the better. if it were me I would contact a skilled dog trainer/behavior counselor/behaviorist to meet the dogs and get their opinion. good luck

EDIT: okay just saw the other posts lol (should read before I reply!) yeah 14 weeks is still a very imprintable age! I have no doubt they can be turned into loving, stable, normal dogs! I definitely suggest finding a trainer/behaviorist to assist you though, and soon. positive socialization is so important before they turn 3 months old. again, good luck!! keep us posted

If their only other option is being put to sleep couldn't you at least give them a chance? Picture being alone and scared in a strange place and somebody you don't know (and possibly you associate with being hurt, as some person on the street may have abused them) lifts you up...you are terrified so you react. Well, if you are a dog that reaction happens to be a bite. It will take time to realize that all humans are not bad.

I think speaking with a behaviorist like Veegan said is a good idea.

I'll give you a definite NO NO NO NO on putting them to sleep. Why should that even be a choice in this matter? Perhaps you aren't equipped to take them but surely someone will be willing to give them a chance and a life that they deserve. Please heed the advice you've been given here and absolutely NO on putting them to sleep. SAVE THEM BOTH SOMEHOW!! PLEASE!!!

Lexie is 14 weeks old... she bites sometimes but its not like an "i wanna kill you bite" shes a puppy.. and they might be big but their pups too. They might just be scared.. or it could of just been a nip.. like what lexie does.. not really a bite that means anything. Im sure if they have some classes or good training and get to know you and are associated with other people they will make awesome pets. Theres no reason to put a puppy down.

My answer is take them in give them a chance. Do NOT let them be PTS. So YES take them in.

I also don't think you clearly know the difference between a "Please put me down now!" bite and an "I wanna kill you!" bite. If it were an "I wanna kill you bite", the dog wouldn't have stopped. It would have snarled and kept biting you even when you stopped the offensive action. If it were an "This doesn't feel right, put me down!" bite, the dog would have given a quick snip and immediately stopped once you stopped the offensive action. Furthermore, the dog would have shied away from you whereas an attacking dog would stand ground or perhaps even bolt forward.

14 weeks is incredibly young. For neglected and possibly abused dogs, it could perhaps have been 14 weeks of hell from human tormentors. These dogs obviously associated humans with negativity, and I would have expected you to know that...Even if you don't think you can take them on, you could at least keep them for the time being until you find another Great Dane foster. Many people have rehabilitated dogs previously used for dog fighting and dog bait. Rehabilitating a 14 week old puppy is much easier. Please give these dogs a chance!

Edit: I was right. Sub backed away when you try to touch him. He's terrified! He's not trying to attack you. He's scared and needs some serious TLC from a conscientious owner. Please be the one for him.

i think dont put them to sleep they need to be givin a chance just like everyone dose, i know you posted a while ago so did you get them or not? if it turns out sub is too agressive then at least take on lime

I definently say DO NOT put them to sleep. They are only 14 weeks old and that is still pretty young. Give them a chance, they really deserve it... They are probably very scared and have taken in alot of abuse:( Please give them another chance.. I know with time and patience they might be able to pull through!!

OK everyone. I called my boss and he said to come and get the dogs emmiedetly. I have good new for lots of people. I'm taking the puppies on!!

where are you located my daughter is looking for a dane to rescue shee has a five acre ranch out on the country. It's 35 mintues to town from here place.

These puppies will probubly we kept by me, but if not, I'll be sure to tell you. The puppies are outside running around with the other dogs right now, I monitered them with the other dogs, and they were great with the dogs!!!!

Wow, that's great to hear they are good with other dogs! :) Have they let you be near them at all? I hope they will get over their fear of people, I'm sure with time they will. Keep us updated! :)
