I've been wondering if we shouldn't let Kiara swim as much as she does.
Today so far she's swam 3 hours and it's only 11 AM. She doesn't tire of it. She'll even ask to go outside just so she can swim.
She swims EVERY day - even sometimes ALL day.
Should we make her stop or is it okay for her to swim so often?
I think at a pool in your home the chlorine levels are low so her skin should be okay. It seems okay to me...

Her coat and skin are fine, i'm just more worried about her body. She seems completely fine, in fact after swimming she comes in and asks to play fetch in here. I just don't want to wearing down her bones and stuff. I'm just paranoid. :p
Its probably really good for her, I am sure most domestic dogs don't get enough excercize.
I wouldn't complain if we had a deep enough pool for Jillie to be obsessed with! :p it gets rid of all that extra energy they have, in less time ;)

As long as her skin, coat & ears do not get bothered I'd let her swim all she wants.
The only thing i can think of is when a child/adult human swims too long the skin gets shrivalled (sp?)...
Anyway, as long as she is drinking enough (non pool water) ;), i think she should be fine...

I've been told it's bath to bath your dog more then...er, well I don't remmeber, but it's a long time anyway..6 months maybe? Anyway, it messes up their natural oils of the skin I guess...I'd assume the same for swimming..but, as you said hers is fine..I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's healthy for her to be getting the exercise

I think it's a healthy form of excercise. I would just be careful with the amount of sun she gets and dangers like heat stroke.
It would be fun if you guys did laps together -- get a little competition going. Heh :p

They get baths once a week and always get compliments on their coats - no dry skin either.

I don't :o We don't really have a good area to bath them so it's hard...plus, Zeke is a little scardy cat when it comes to water :rolleyes:
let's see a really strong, healthy, not to mention extra clean dog..........hum....i don't see a problem. i'd keep and eye on her skin and fur drying out...but there are vitamins for that. :D :D
Swimming is the best therapy for dogs with arthritis. It has the least amount of stress on joints of any physical activity a human or a dog can participate in. If it's good for dogs with disabilities then it has to be good for Kiara! If she loves it and her skin is not getting dried out from the chlorine, then let her swim as much as she wants! You may want to supplement her food with some kind of omega 3 fatty acid or fish oil supplement to keep her skin from drying out as the summer goes on.
The only thing I would worry about it the pool!! Duncan swam TWICE in a friend's pool and it took days to get all the dog hair out of the filter! But he has a lot of really long hair and Kiara doesn't...so go for it!!
Sounds like good exercise-- I guess I'd just be on the lookout for "swimmer's ear". Swimming is actually easier on bone joints than running around on dry land, so I wouldn't worry about that either. i think it's great you have a pool so at least she's swimming around in clean water! Do you swim with her?
