Alexa just called me from work saying that the vet's office called and left a message about Dewey. She'll be home in about an hour and we are going to call the vet back. Please keep your fingers crossed that it is good news. Maybe the vet gave us the wrong diagnoisis. Maybe things aren't as bad as they seem. Please everyone pray, I'm not ready for Dewey to leave us yet.

Turns out it wasn't the vet that called Alexa but a wonderful lady from the shelter. Earlier today Alexa called them to let them know about Dewey just so they could be aware. The lady from the shelter called the vet and spoke with him. She told Alexa that there is no way to be 100% sure on distemper without doing an autotopsy. She asked if we would be willing to take him to another vet for a second opinion. This was something both Alexa and I had discussed earlier. We still couldn't bring ourselves to call and make an appoitment for him to be put to sleep. The shelter is going to pay for us to see a different vet. We are still waiting for her to call us back and let us know when we will be taking him and where.

Oh, hope is there! I will pray that the next vet has a better diagnosis and can find a way to make Dewey feel better. It would be a tragedy to put a dog down without knowing for sure!

It looks like there is hope now though. Did you get an appointment? I can talk to the 5 vets at work and see all their opinions on the situation if you want me to. I'm SO glad the shelter has offered to pay for the second opinion. That is the right thing for them to do.
I know you are heartbroken, but try to stay positive. I am holding out much hope for little Dewey. One of my favorite shelter dogs survived Distemper when he was a puppy. You have my number still? Please call me if you need ANYTHING.

A little more insight, I hope you don't mind Laura..
I was talking to Alexa on AIM when Laura called. Dewey either has Distemper or a very serious case of pneumonia. The vet said that it'd cost $1000's to turn him around and even so it's not likely to be successful.
We all know how hard this decision is to make. Laura i'm so sorry things didn't work out differently. Like i've said, atleast Dewey has had a happy time and has been loved by two wonderful ladies.
