Student: 'It Just Makes Me Sick...'



A biology class lesson in Gunnison, Utah involving the dissection of a live dog has outraged some parents and students, according to a report.


"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Biology teacher Doug Bierregaard said.

Biology teacher Doug Bjerregaard, who is a substitute teacher at Gunnison Valley High School, wanted his students to see how the digestive system of a dog worked.

Bjerregaard made arrangements for his students to be a part of a dissection of a dog that was still alive.

The dog was still alive, but the teacher said it was sedated before the dissection began.

With the students watching, the sedated dog's digestive system was removed.

"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody's learning from it," student Sierra Sears said.

The teacher said the lesson would allow students to see the organs actually working.

"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Bierregaard said.

The school's principal, Kirk Anderson, said notifications went to parents explaining the dog was going to be euthanized and that the experiment would be done with the dog's organs still functioning.

The teacher is standing by his decision and calls it the ultimate educational experience.

Principal Anderson said he supports the lesson and it will be allowed to continue because the students are learning.

The dog used in the experiment was going to be euthanized despite the class project.

Eviscerate the teacher and see if he feels any pain? After all, he's just going to die sometime anyway.

So, let me get this straight...this idiotic teacher thinks that because the dog was scheduled to be euthanized ANYWAY that it's okay to dissect it???

I also hope the principal and the Board of Education are held accountable.

That is the saddest and most disgusting thing I've read in the doghouse.:( It says a lot for mans respect to other creatures on this planet.:(

When I was in high school our teacher had a cat (already dead) for us to dissect. I refused and I refused to do the frog thing too!
Suprisingly, I still passed.

Same here...the biology teacher knew I adored cats, and excused me from the cat dissection. I came close to passing out anyway, and even years later shudder at the thought. I really thought that classroom dissections were for college students, and especially ones in the medical profession....and that computers had taken over for the 'hands on' approach. Sadly it seems I'm wrong on that one. I wonder how many parents actually saw the so called notice stating this was going to occur in that class? :confused:

My daughter in jr. high is disecting a lamprey tomorrow, so far she has disected chicken wings and things like that. She wants to go into the medical field so I am sure it will be worse, but doing this on a living creature is just so wrong.

I found an update on the story. as for normal dissection in schools, i am generally against it, but i will be participating in the dissection that are comgin up in my biology class becaus ei am going to be a vet and i've known that since i was about 10 years old and i don't think it's realistic for me to become a vet without ever dissecting anything. if i were going to do anything else though i would skip it.


SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - A Utah high school expressed regret on Thursday for the vivisection of a stray dog as part of a biology lesson.


Some parents and students complained after a substitute biology teacher at Gunnison Valley High School took eight girls, aged 16 and 17, to a local veterinary clinic on Tuesday to watch abdominal dissection on a dog under general anesthetic. The lesson was aimed at teaching students about the digestive system.

"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody is learning from it," student Sierra Sears told local TV channel ABC 4 news.

Donald Hill, assistant superintendent of the South Sanpete School District, said: "This shouldn't happen again. Our schools will not participate in this again. We don't condone this."

Vet Tom Anderson said the incident, reported in local television and newspapers, had been blown out of proportion.

"It was about a three-minute procedure involving abdominal surgery. It was done under general anesthetic. It was an aggressive and abandoned dog. It was not fit to be adopted," Anderson said. The dog was put to sleep after the procedure.

The school said permission had been sought and obtained from parents of the students, and that two students had exercised their right to opt out of the visit.

"All they did was view it. They did not remove or dissect any parts. It was not barbaric," said assistant principal Trevor Powell. "(But) we will have to find a better way next time."

It was not clear what action, if any, would be taken against the substitute teacher, who has not been named.

The first story makes it sound like they were in the classroom doing the dissection, but the update says they were at a vet clinic. I don't know why they thought this would be a good idea cause they weren't going to SEE anything happening with the digestive system while the dog was out. What did they think they were going to see? They could have watched a video.

Im not against Disection, I actually ejoyed the frog one. But Doing it on a live animal just because it was "Unadoptable" Is just really sad.

No live animal, adoptable or not, should ever have to be used in such a manner. These kids were not in Vet school where this information may have at the very least been benificial in a hands on environment.

This poor soul was put under, cut open because it could be, and put on display for students who were there just so they could see. This substitute teacher should never be allowed to teach biology again, or any subject IMO.

This is going too far. My high school did have a class that used deceased cats that were donated with permission for the purpose of educating an advanced biology class with hands on experiance.

I'm just disgusted in general. :(

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE TODAY!!!!!!!! What about the dogs' owners too? This makes me SO mad, they have no right to do that!
I say that we "put him under" and diasect him! :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: I can't believe that! Just because the poor dog was going to be euthanized, doesn't mean that it should be used for "education!!!"
