Teen wearing bomb stopped at checkpoint

HAWARA CHECKPOINT, West Bank -- The Palestinian teenager wore an oversize red jersey as he approached Israeli soldiers who had gotten a tip about a suicide bomber at this crowded checkpoint Wednesday. Suddenly the soldiers saw something bulge under his top.

The Israelis dashed behind concrete barricades, pointed their guns at the youth and ordered him to stop. On their instructions, he took off his jersey, revealing a bulky, gray bomb vest -- and setting off a tense encounter captured in exclusive Associated Press Television News footage.

"He told us he didn't want to die. He didn't want to blow up," said Lt. Tamir Milrad.

Members of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in the Balata refugee camp next to Nablus claimed responsibility for the latest in a series of foiled attacks on Israel by Palestinian youths. Al-Aqsa is loosely linked to Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.

The family of the teenager, identified as Hussam Abdo, said he was gullible and easily manipulated.

"He doesn't know anything (about politics), and he has the intelligence of a 12-year-old," said his brother, Hosni.

Abdo, though 16, looked far younger, and the Israeli military initially said it believed he was 10. His family said he acted strangely Tuesday, giving candy to them and to neighbors and refusing to explain why.

Since the Israeli assassination of Hamas spiritual leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin on Monday, Israel has been on high alert. Hamas has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings and other attacks in recent years.

Wednesday's confrontation began about 4 p.m. when soldiers at the Hawara checkpoint outside Nablus received intelligence a bomber was there. They shut down the crossing and began searching hundreds of people there, the military said.

Suddenly Abdo, wearing the jersey, approached them.

"We saw that he had something under his shirt," Milrad said.

The soldiers, taking cover behind the barriers, sent a yellow army robot to bring scissors to the teenager so he could cut off the vest.

Abdo, visibly frightened and confused, cut off part of the vest and struggled with the rest. "I don't how to get this off," he said in frustration before successfully removing it.

Soldiers ordered him to take off his undershirt and pull down his jeans to make sure he had no other weapons. Then they arrested him.

Sappers blew up the vest, which the army said was an 18-pound bomb.

The military said Abdo's mission was to kill soldiers at the crowded checkpoint.

"In addition to the fact that he would have harmed my soldiers, he would have also harmed the Palestinians waiting at the checkpoint, and there were 200 to 300 innocent Palestinians there," said the commander of the checkpoint, who identified himself only as Lt. Col. Guy.

Several teenagers have carried out suicide bombings over the past 3 years, and there has been recent concern that militant groups were turning to younger attackers to elude Israeli security checks.

This incident is horrifying, but lives were saved, the boy was saved, the soldiers were not killed, and the innocent boy was not a sacrificial lamb as whoever strapped the bomb on him intended.

I know there is a god.

But how can you claim a god when you are willing
to send children to die for your cause?

It just blows my mind to think that any person would want to do that to a kid, especially one who has been dealt a setback from the start.

I just hope the good people see this for what it represents.

When you have a twisted sense of what is right and wrong and religious.....

The people running the terrorist organizations are the definition of pure evil. In large part they are financiers who have the money to get people to advance their causes, without themselves being on the front lines. Any reference to religion they make is purely to feed the masses, who in large part are less than educated and are feeding off of the emotion of fighting the oppressor rather than engaging in rational thought. The arab governments in large part have no problem with this, as it keeps the people's minds off of the oppression and poverty which they face at the hands of their arab brothers. The christian faith had a similar period, the crusades, which went on for much the same reason. (Most of the knights and leadership in the crusades who were second or third sons who had no hope of an inheritance, so the chance of winning their own land in battle was the easy way out) The paupers of the Paupers Crusade were promised riches and a straight path to heaven in reward for their service. The victims of the intefadeh<sp?> are promised similar intangible rewards, and their families are paid large sums of money for their sacrifice. (Saddam Hussein made $25K lump sum payments to the families of suicide bombers) There is a God, as proven by the salvation of the child, but their leaders are using religion for their own tortured purposes.

Did anyone notice how quickly the new head of Hamas backed down from the threat of 'war against the Big Satan....' Namely, targeting Americans and American interests abroad.....

They know that any move against the US will just
bring a whole world of hurt to the area of Palestine.....

Judging by the tip that the IDF received, I do believe that there are some people who are working against the asinine people sending youngsters to do their dirty work.

The Palestinian spokespersons have some nerve to claim that Israel and any country that back them are terrorists.

And the UN has no credibility for not condeming acts like these......and where is Amnesty Intl. and some of the other child rights groups???

Of course, the whole situation is way more complicated than taking sides in "bad, sicko Palestinians...good, endangered noble Israelis" scenario.

The kid was so human, saying he didn't want to die. Now if we could just get both sides to stop killing each other! Sadly, I look for a giant Islamist reaction to Yassin's assassination by Easter. And for the "eye for an eye" stuff to continue...:(

The Israelis, while not perfect, at least target point targets (Yassim, known terrorist leaders, known terrorists) with normally minimal killing of civilians (I have sincere doubts that anyone in close proximity to Yassim's car was a truly innocent bystander). When possible they use assasination teams to take out the leaders. Yassim wouldn't have been alive to be hit by the helicopter if the Mossad had not had an extremely rare failure.

The terrorist groups, Hamas, the PLF, etc tend to target areas where there is no one but civilians. Cafes, wedding halls, pizza shops, so they can get maximum media coverage and maximum shock effect.There's not much media exposure to be had by killing an Israeli soldier.

Lady' Human, you may not realize it, but you are taking sides! I am a pacifist, and regard all the killing and destruction by both sides to be atrocious. Government sponsored assassination is illegal, for starters.

Your assertion that all the Palestinian refugees are Jordanians is incorrect. (OK you said PLOs, I'm not jumping on you). This thing has a long bloody history, and the last 3 years have not been conducive to solving the problem. Except for extremists on both sides, everyone wants a chartered sovereign State for the Palestinians, borders yet to be determined. Are you with us?

Some religious talk show hosts prophesy the Apocolypse beginning in this conflict; all reasonable people want a slightly different outcome. So, let us pray...

Many share your pessimism, this is a big subject on a political forum board I do. The solution will involve making Jerusalem independent and getting Palestine nation-built like Afghanistan/Iraq. Just hope it doesn't blow us all up before it gets serious clear fair international attention.

One thing that made me feel better about this story was the outpouring of voices from the Palestinian people who condemned the Al-aqsa Martyr Brigade for pulling a stunt like this.

Even this kid's parents were ticked off about this

The populace asked the 'recruiters' to lay off talking to young kids, trying to entice them to die for the cause. Now, to work on getting teens and young people to stop this nonsense...

The idea of killing a cripple who advocated the idea of sending grownups and children to attack innocent people on buses, in restaurants and in public doesn't bother me at all.

To me, an Apache gunship flying over your town is more acceptable than trying to figure out if the person who just got on your bus is going to blow himself up..

I really don't see the killing of the sheik as a 'political assasination'. Hamas is a terrorist organization and IF they had half a brain amongst themselves they would sit down at the table and talk.....as opposed to bitching and moaning about
the need to send homicide bombers to oppose the occupation.

I agree Richard...wholeheartedly. Argh...and what REALLY miffs me about this story is that they not only used a child, but a child with a mental handicap preventing him from even REMOTELY understanding the underlying motives behind his actions. Grrr...these people need to do thier own darn dirty work.

In Northern Ireland, one catalyst to the reduction of the Troubles was when two little kids got killed by an IRA bomb. Both sides said that's ENOUGH!! and started to talk, yielding the Good Friday Accords. It isn't perfect, but better.

One can only hope that having this poor little scared kid on worldwide TV would show just how mean spirited and cowardly the terrorist leaders are.

The Charter of the PLO (Recognized as the leaders of the Palestinians by various NGO's and GO's) still calls for the destruction of the state of Israel. When either:

a) The palestinians throw out their leadership and start afresh

or

b) Yassir Arafat stands up in the general assembly hall in the UN and repudiates that statement, and puts a new charter in effect

When a person becomes a bomb and blows him/herself up, it is actually an act of premeditated murder and the targets are civilians. If the bomber is female, does she get rewarded with 72 virgins? Does anyone know what the Koran states about female rewards?

Horrific that a young boy, rumored to be mentally challenged, was manipulated this way. Those who cast him in that role are criminals.

The majority of Mothers [and fathers] world-wide are appalled at the terrorists' tactic of using children as bombs.

homicide bomb......18 was the right age.:rolleyes:

Thank god that kid is in safe hands now.
