which is better akc or ckc?
Doesn't really matter. Neither one is proof of health or anything - just proves that your dog's parents were registered purebreds (meaning that your dog is a purebred too). And neither have restrictions on inbreeding or anything either. It's better to look at the quality of the breeder than which organization the pup is registered with.
...so, the CKC papers you got do show that your maltese is purebred, just not a health guarantee or anything. :)
where would i look?
For what?Quote:

CKC in my opinion but only because I hate AKC(and I have many reasons to)
I honestly could care less about the both of them.:o
I know what´s AKC, but what´s CKC?
ckc= continental kennel club... i was just wondering cause i have owned akc dogs in the past never heard of ckc
cali,
we are looking to stud him. and wasn't sure if ckc was as good as i have heard of akc
From everything I've read in other places, AKC tends to have a better reputation than CKC.
wich CKC are we talken about here? contentental or canadian, being in canada i just assumed canadian..
contentental.. i just hope is a good one..
Just because your new dog is a purebred doesn't mean you should stud him. :( 3 million dogs are put to sleep every year in shelters in the US. :(Quote:

And there's lots of work involved, even if you don't own the mom. You have to get him tested for different genetic diseases, there could be complications, ect ect. :(
I'll have to agree with Wolfie on this one. There are way too many dogs that end up being bounced around from home to home, or end up at the humance society or animal control because someone had a litter of pups and couldn't find GOOD homes for all of them.
Besides the expense issue, your pup will live a healthier life if you get him nutered. And you'll be happier if you take him to the dog park and he's not trying to mount the females or trying to get aggressive with the males.
How old are you?
Please, get him neutered. He'll live a way better life, being happier and healthier, not to mention you won't be bringing anymore unwanted animals into the world. There are lots of reputable breeders, and I say that it's good for them to reputable, but we don't need anymore. Nor does it sound like you'd even be reputable (in my opinion it takes more than one dog to be a reputable breeder).
YellowLabLover,
i am getting up there... i am going on 34 yrs old why?
wolfsoul,
no i aint getting him fixed... we want to carry out the bloodlines abd stuff like that... we r also looking to show him...
If he's not even registered with any of the clubs yet, you'll have a hell of a time trying to get into the show ring and becoming a reputable breeder. It seems like you're just wanting to stud him for the money you *could* make, which isn't a very good idea at all. There is much more to breeding and showing than getting the paper and putting a personals ad in the paper. There are too many over-bred and in-bred dogs in the world right now, because of the people who get a purebred and decide to breed/stud, just cuz they can.
I agree with heinz. If your dog isn't already registered, that means he came from backyard breeders. Which means there's a very very small chance you can actually show him. And because your dog came from backyard breeders, you don't know anything about his lines. He could have terrible diseases in his blood lines that you'd be passing on to the pups. Have you done his OFA or Penhipp? CERF? BAER?
I didn't even think about the whole backyard breeder thing. My Charlie was most likely bred from a puppy mill or something similar... hence is little tail and slight personality issues. :) I love him to death, but he would have probably sat in that pet store til he was an adult then sent back to wherever he came from if I hadn't taken pity on his imperfectness. There can be soooo many problems if you get a dog from a puppy mill, backyard breeder and the like.
umm just because the dog is not registered does NOT mean BYB. the breeder does NOT have to be involved in kennel clubs to be a good breeder. I plan to breed misty(assuming she passes all tests) and she is not registered. infact I prefere it that way.
however I would like to know where you got the dog from, has he been health tested? if you plan to show him does he conform to the standerd? how is his temperment? his general health? etc..
Oh, i know that not being regustered doesn't necessarily mean BYB. Although, health certificates are a must regardless. I am just not in favour of breeding for breedings sake, or for the money. I think that as a general rule of thumb, if you're not already a breeder one should spar or neuter their babies, so they'll live healthier lives.
hehe I probibly should of mentioned I was refering to wolfsouls post, you just posted at the same time as I did lol :D
lol... my post, wolfsoul's post... either way. :D Seems like wolfsoul and I pretty much share the same opinion, so... *shrugs* :)
i personally think that if the dog is healthy and you dont try to "make a new breed" breeding is fine....i would also see if that breed is one that you see often in shelters.
To be honest with you I have never seen one in the shelter.. they cost way to much money for someone to put there. trust me i have done research on it.. this type of dog goes for about 400.00-1500.00
Sorry what breed is your dog?
age etc?
I think i missed where you said that.

If you are 34 years old, you should know well enough to get your pup fixed and give him a healthier life. ;)
That's why I asked....
I am not getting him fixed.. we are going to show and breed him!!!
Just out of interest what are you going to breed him to and why?
Will you get the pick of the litter?
Ky and Rio
dont worry shelly60. people around here are just very weary of people that want to breed their dog. we have seen so many dogs be put into shelters and put to sleep.
even though your first few posts havnt had good replies. i hope you stick around. :D

I've just been reading this thread, and, I wanted to say that I've actually seen a few maltese in shelters. It may be rare, but, it still happens. They're just as apt to get mistreated and discarded as any other dog. People spend a lot of money on dogs, and, that doesn't stop them from taking them to shelters or abandoning them completely. Just wanted to mention that.
I've volunteered in humane societies and shelters and have seen quite a few maltese come in. Mostly because people don't realise how much work they are when it comes to upkeep and grooming. And just because someone spends a lot of money on a dog doesn't mean that they're going to take good care of it.
I just think we need to concentrate on finding homes for the pups in teh shelters before we add even more to the population. More dogs get put to sleep at shelters because there just isn't any room for them. I happen to find my mutt when she was on her last legs there. It was pretty much her last day, if she hadn't been adopted that day, she was scheduled to get put down the next morning. I just fail to understand those who insist on breeding when there is already an over-population in the shelters. Breeding doesn't really benefit anyone except those getting paid. I know this may seem like a relatively narrow minded POV, but I've been working with animals since I was 15 and I've seen it all. I don't think I'll ever be in favour of breeding/studding if you aren't already established and if there isn't a REALLY good reason to do it. But, hell.. that's just me. :)
