Cirrus Needs To Have Surgery
I brought Cirrus into the vet this morning because I thought he had a UTI. I found out that his bladder was very enlarged and distended meaning that his urinary tract had been blocked. The in house urine test showed that he has both struvite and calcium oxalates which are causing blockage. He may also have a slight UTI.:(
Since he's only 1 1/2 years old and is very difficult to medicate, both my vet and I decided that the best course of treatment would be for him to have a perineal urethrostomy and also put him on special food to help prevent new crystals from forming.I also need to eliminate as much stress as possible meaning that Storm and Cirrus need to be separated as much as possible. The surgery will give him a larger pee hole like that of a female cat. Here's a link that describes the surgery very well http://consumer.vetmedcenter.com/con...FL1EM.xml&dt=A.
My vet has to call in a surgeon and he was going to have his surgery late this afternoon but the surgeon was unable to make it. Now he'll have it tomorrow morning around 11:00am. He also became blocked again while being at the vet so my vet but a catheter in him and he's staying at my vet's overnight. He also had bloodwork done to make sure that his kidneys are functioning properly and an x-ray to make sure that he didn't also have stones.
I know that there are some risks involved and he can have some complications after surgery, but I feel that this is the best way to go for a cat like Cirrus. Please keep him in your thoughts and say some prayers for him. I need all of the support that I can get. I miss him very much and so does Sunny. Thanks in advance.
Still Playing The Waiting Game
Hi everyone. Thanks for all of the prayers and positive thoughts but you'll need to please say them again tomorrow. Unfortunately the surgeon didn't have enough time this afternoon to operate on Cirrus so he'll be having his surgery tomorrow at 11am instead. I could've brought him home tonight but I didn't want to stress him out any more than I have to because he'd just have to go back to the vets again tomorrow morning.
His catheter is working just fine but he's still very scared.:( The urine and blood work came back today from the lab and they had the same results as my vet did. His kidneys are working fine and he has both kinds of crystals in his urine which are causing blockage. He doesn't have a UTI so his whole problem is with the crystals and blockage. This can be caused by diet and stress.
Storm has been causing him daily stress so I'll have to keep Storm away from Cirrus as much as possible.:( He'll also be going on a special diet for the rest of his life. I may eventually change all of my furkids over to it.
I also found out that the quoted price for the surgery is wrong. It's much less expensive than I thought so thats a relief for me too. I only need to pay that amount right away and the other amount can be paid monthly to my vet.:) Cirrus only needs to stay in the hospital a maximum of 24 hours. They just need to be sure that he's able to pee correctly. My vet is open until 8pm tomorrow so I'll probably bring Cirrus home with me since my vet doesn't work on Thursdays.
Thanks again for all of the well wishes and support. I really appreciate it.:) I'll be updating again tomorrow night.
