"Willie" stands a great chance of getting dopted if her web picture gets circulated - that's how Dad found me. Without my web picture he'd never have driven so far to visit my jail - the picture made him do it. To bad more shelters an jails can't take and post nice pictures of the inmates lookin for homes.

You're so right that this lovely pic should be circulated because it would help Willie get a good home. I wonder if they've put her pic on that wonderful Pet Finders site you have there in the US of A.
I found out that Willie is two years old.
Willy is beautiful! I wish that I could adopt him but I already have 2 dogs! I wish you the best in finding the perfect home!!
Willie is supposed to be at the Adoption Event on Saturday at the Pet Supplies Plus store in Berwyn, IL from 1:00-4:00. Heaven help me, I just might go see her. (I really can't handle 3 big dogs, or can I?????)

Sudler, You get Willie. You can always replace a husband(or threaten to) after 22years mine just asks how much more dog food (or any other ) food do we need to order? Sue, I hope your hubby is not a cranky, hard-hearted, "you're not going to turn this house into a kennel" type like someone I know.
Okay, I'll be serious for a moment. Only you know your home, your husband, your schedule and your dogs enough to know whether this would be a good idea. We all love the idea of another dog getting a good home, hence the overwhelming enthusiasm for the adoption. But you know, I hope, that even if the circumstances won't work, or Willie finds another home, you and your current pooches will still be valauble members of our community here.

Whew! If you wait a while to check in around here, you miss a lot!!! Sue, do you have pressure or what? Maybe you asked for by hinting that willie was irresistable. My thought is this...if you don't have human kids to worry about (and even if you do), but if you think you can make a home for this girl, and your husband won't leave you over it, go for her. You obviously are smitten!! I would "kill" for another Golden Retriever, but I know I absolutely don't have the time or room for another. Just go with your heart, and your husband's! LOL! And most of all, let us know what you decide!

I am really seriously thinking about going to visit the Berwyn store and meeting Willie and then we'll see what happens!
Pam asked what the foster Mom had to say: She said that Willie would for sure get along with my male, but depending on the temperament of my female, she could possibly get along with her. She then asked questions about how Shiloh gets along with other females and if she is dominant or submissive.
Those are hard questions to answer. Shiloh is submissive to Killian, but if any outside dog challenges her, she won't tolerate it. She allows me to pay attention to Killian, but I must also pay attention to her. She also sleeps with me at night. I guess you might say she's attached to me. I wouldn't want any dominance problems, especially if one would get hurt.
So I guess I have a lot to consider. Anyone with 3 dogs have any advice? These are all dogs who weigh about as much as I do.

We own 3 dogs...a tibetan spaniel & 2 elderly shelties. We had just 2 dogs for a while & then got the 3rd. Frankly, there isn't much difference between owning 2 or 3. The main negative difference is that vet costs are triple instead of double. I can't think of other negatives.Quote:

A main positive is that we can always take 1 dog somewere...like to the vet or to do pet therapy...& the other 2 have each other for company. When we owned only 2 dogs, it broke their hearts ever to be parted...& the one left at home would tend to play up a bit.
I'd be interested to hear others' experiences.
I think having three dogs would be good for the reasons Angels3 mentioned. I think you have to have the right dogs for this though. A dog behaviorist told me that most dogs do best in groups of even numbers. One example of this sticks out in my mind... We have playgroups at the shelter so dogs can run off energy with their doggy friends and be more content once they get back to their kennels. One time we had Danny (dalmatian) playing with Homer (pitbull). They often played together and got along great every session. There was another dog, Nadia (malamute) who had been in a playgroup with both Danny and Homer seperately and got along with each of them every time. We decided to bring Nadia and one other dog in so all four could play together. We brought Nadia in first and she jumped into the play with Danny and Homer. Before we could even get the fourth dog out, Danny had mounted Nadia and was being very dominant and mouthy. Nadia didn't want any part of it and snapped back toward Danny. A few of the volunteers had to yell so they would stop fighting and we took Danny back to his kennel. This group of three happened to bring out the dominant side of Danny. I think most dogs who get along with other dogs won't have a problem in a group of three but you sometimes have to be careful in these instances.
You know, I just realized.. what if that's the same thing that happened when I brought Reece home.. 3 animals and Harley got so dominant that it also released his chasing/nipping instinct http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/confused.gif Well, I actually did keep Reece at my sister's for three days once to see if Harley would behave around Shiloh again but that didn't work so maybe not..
I think you are half way there already Sudilar. One of the last times I said "Let's see what happens" is when I took a stray kitten home, we also added "until we find a home for him". Well my "provisional cat" is still with me after 18 years.
Since I live in an apartment I can only keep cats for the time being, but in my experience 3 is not much more work than 2. As for the vet, everytime I go to the surgery and he asks for the surname he says "Oh it's one of the mob" (between me and my sister we have a number of pets registered) and often gives me a family discount!

Sudilar....It sounds as if you weaken further (and you're pretty much there!) and bring Willie home, that the dogs themselves may provide you with your answer. Shiloh may hold the key. It may very well be that if she accepts Willie it may be a "go." As others have said, it is your decision and we certainly don't want you to feel pressured into doing something you don't feel comfortable doing. I am so happy that you are thinking about Willie. She's a beauty and she deservs a good home like yours. It's a shame that anyone could have given up a dog like that, I can't understand why because she's incredibly beautiful and kind looking, but hopefully she'll have a happy ending. I wish I could take her.
It's great that you're seriously thinking about adopting Willie. It's good to find out all the info you can and see if she would fit into your home or not. Maybe bring your 2 dogs with you to visit Willie on neutral ground and see how they react to each other. I'm sure everyone here agrees that it would be great if you could adopt her, but it's definitely something that you and your husband should feel is right. I am wanting to do a rescue...but would an older dog be more scary (because of their size) to my kitties? A puppy would be more their size but so much more exuberant....ah...decisions decisions....

When I brought Bella home they hid and didn't eat, etc. I was a basket case for about a week. Gradually over time that has all changed. They play together now, although I do monitor them to make sure it doesn't get too rough because of Bella's size....15 lbs. and growing....will be about 50 lbs when full grown.
I had originally wanted to get a rescue dog. Hubby wanted only a poodle and I couldn't find one in good health or that wasn't a "senior." He also felt that a puppy would be best because we would know the background. Picking the right breed is important also. I had researched pugs (love those pugglies!) and thought they would be excellent with my kitties. The vet agreed. Said they are a great breed. Hubby still wanted his poodle so that's what we got. Maybe someday a pug.... Anyway there are LOTS of great breeds out there that would do well with cats. Whatever you do, I know you will give it lots of thought so I am sure it will work out. If it's having three dogs your worried about, TRUST me it really no different than having two dogs. The only thing you have to concider is space, time, and money(it not that much more)
From my own personal veiw I love having three dogs. You are NEVER lonely. And you get to have three different personalities. I get a dog that is mellow and loving(Felice) I get a dog that is athletic and energetic(Zeus) and I get a dog that is a lovey dovey baby who is the best watch dog(Hercules)
But in the end it all comes down to if you REALLY want another dog

Yes, I think some of those reasons are why my hubby and I (well...mostly me, he's not as gung ho about the whole dog thing as I am http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif) are waiting until our lives are less spent commuting! ugh!! It is amazing everything one must consider before brining a dog into the family, and since I know we'll probably be having children sometime down the road, the dog will have to adjust to changes like that.

Here's an excerpt from Willie's story:
Well, I went to see Willie today. Sadly, we did not adopt her.
She is a beautiful, large girl with scars on her nose and a broken tooth. She is very watchful of and attached to her foster Dad (who picked her up from the Chicago Pound). She was there for a while (The Pound) because she was evidence in a drug bust. She was their guard dog. After meeting her, I can't see that she would have been any good at it, she's too nice. She does seem to watch everything happening, but I didn't see any meanness in her. She is very strong. She was sweet, though. The Chicagoland Shepherd director thought that she should not be placed in a home with another female who was so close to her own age. She felt that there would be a dominance issue between the females. The director suggusted a male for my group.
There were some very nice shepherds at the event. The newly rescued were so skinny! It was sad. I wanted to take them all home.
There was a really cute little mix (35 lbs.) that looked like a GSD, but really small. They called her a "pocket Shepherd".
We spent 4 hours with the dogs and I can't believe I didn't bring one home.
I guess Willie wasn't meant to be. I hope they find her a good home. I'm sure they will.
