Any advice would be appreciated for me, as my dog Fancy is expecting pups this week. I have the clinical advice, but experience is the best basis for advice. Any little tricks you ahve learned to make her transition from dog to mother dog would be appreciated! Thanks for all your help!! This isn't advice, just a memory. When my Bailey was pregnant she was 3 years old. She had been an only dog and it was her job to get the paper in every morning. She took this job so seriously that she would listen for the car that delivered the paper to drive by and wake us up to let her out so she could do "her job". The night she had her puppies - 7 of them - had to be wearing on her and you could tell she was perplexed about where were these things coming from and what on earth was she going to do with them. That next morning the paper was delivered. We let her out and she went a quarter of the way and then turned around, looking back to the house where her puppies were. It went on like this for a while...what should I do...get the paper...go back to those puppies. We finally told her to come back in to the house. She didn't have to get the paper. That was the only day she missed "her job". She was a good mother to the puppies but as days went by, she started to leave them for short periods of time and then longer and longer. We always joked, she was a "working girl" and motherhood didn't come easy to her. The last of those 7 puppies died at the age of 17 years, 84 days just last week.
What a beautiful piece of memory! I will be sure to print it out and add it to Fancy's "Baby Book" as we all hope to have our beloved pets that long! Thanks, it makes seeing her have them much more worth it!

Ohh your Doberman is having puppies. Doby pups are soo cute. When they are born I want to see pics if possible. Do you think any will be white?

Weaning Age
Many people feel that a puppy can be weaned and go
to a new
home as soon as he begins to eat solid food. While
the
puppy will likely survive being taken away from Mom
and his
littermates, he will be deprived of some very
valuable
lessons in manners. This can make things much more
difficult for you and the puppy. From 5 to 8 weeks
of age,
Mom will teach the puppy what he should or shouldn't
do,
among other things. He'll also learn how to get
along
within the litter and that he can't always have what
he
wants. Personality traits will become more evident,
increasing your chances of selecting the right dog
for you.
If you are purchasing a dog from a breeder, it's
fine to
make arrangements in advance but it's in your best
interest, as well the puppy's, to leave him with his
mom
until he's 8 weeks old.

No pups yet, but we are patiently waiting. Thanks for the great advice, and I am afraid that none of the pups will be white. Though she will have all 4 of the other colors. And I really appreciate the weaning advice. This will be her only litter, as she is a working dog, and has to go everywhere with Nik. I will be posting a "birth" announcement as soon as the puppies are born, so keep a watch. Cross your fingers!!

Is nik understanding whats going on with fancy? how is he taking this? is it grounding him more?
what a photo opportunity - the first time nik holds one of fancy's pups with her looking on - i can just picture it in my mind! how sweet and precious.... ahhhh sigh.

Fancy had 11 pups this morning, all 4 colors! And Nik is so very proud! You would think that he was the new dad! Thanks to all of you for the advice...pic comming soon!

When you mean they have 4 colors what do you mean? Did you get some whites in the litter? If so, are they male or female? All 4 colors is black, blue. red and fawn. No whites I am afraid, but she had enough...lol! Thanks again..the pics are comming this weekend!
