Deal with the heat

It's been going up to 30 degrees around here and Mickey is not really taking it well. He's got all that fur :p Any idea on how to make him stay cool? I would hose him down a bit but he doesn't even like walking by the sprinklers because then he'll get wet (:rolleyes: ) I change his water every so often to make sure its fresh and cold. He likes to sleep under the table in the kitchen and patioo for some shade, but other than that he's always in the light.

I know its normal for him (especially with his amount of fur) to be hot, but I see him when he naps and he's taking heavy quick breaths. I find it a bit weird.

Any ideas? The AC's will be up soon so I just need a few ideas. Thanks :)

There's special cooling beds you can get for them to lay on,

There are two probs with that though - 1 - my parents won't want to order online. My dad made one purchase online and it was to get this math program to help me out in class. - 2 - There are no Petsmart's here. Or Petco's. Just 'J.E. Mondou's' which suck :p.

we often put a "wading pool" in the backyard during the ummer. The dogs love it!!!

I'm going to ask my mom about the pool idea. Myabe he just doesn't like getting "sprayed" with water... because he doesn't mind a bath...?

How about a fan in a shaded area for now? Kai's the same..he pants often...and I just feel so sorry for him after exercise. Kai use to hate water, but I started spraying him when he couldn't run away..and after a few days he was ok with it.

No clue but Abby likes ice cubes in her water. :)

Nebo wouldn't really enjoy being sprayed down either, but he LOVES the kiddy pool we keep out there for him! Maybe you could give that a try. :)

Clean out those 1 gallon milk jugs and fill them with water, then let them freeze over night. In the morning put them next to where he sleeps or if he has a dog house put them in the dog house. They will help keep the area cooler.

Its been really hot here too! Today it was 105!:eek: :eek: I spray them with water, and keep the in the house, with of course the air conditioner on. They also like ice cubes:)

Our house doesn't have air conditioning, and it's been getting up in the forties lately :eek: So, Timber is usually outside in the shade, or I take her to the beach or the creek for a good swim :) Or we can play with the hose. I'll chase her around and spray her...If I'm not playing with her, than it's no fun, cuz otherwise she hates the hose lol

Last year I took my australian shephard in to get shaved for the summer. They told me it is uneccesary, that the undercoat acts as a regulator. Not only does it trap the heat in the the winter, but it traps the cool in the summer. I asked my vet, and he says that is true, both with my aussie and husky. I also provide access to the garage and plenty of cold water for them. I have a kiddie pool I fill up and the dogs get in it.

Would it be the same with Shelties than? I'm guessing it would...thanks for the info Tonya. :)

Does Mickey like ice cubes? I know they don't last all day, but mine love them, and I think it cools them down a bit. There's also something called a "chilly bone" that I have seen in pet stores--it has a sponge inside that freezes, and then it's cool for a while when the dog plays with it. I also just read today, to wet down a rope toy, and freeze it overnight--I'm sure this would be best outside, but it may keep him cool--it feels good on their teeth too:) One more thing, how about putting water in his kong, and freezing it overnight?? Probably another outside toy, but cool nonetheless.

I want to give him ice cubes (he likes them too) but my Mom is afraid he might swallow them. Mickey does that a lot. He'll just take things and swallow them :rolleyes:

The 30 degrees confused me at first too. lol. It was 100f today here.

lol, I don't know how to calculate faranhiet :confused: only celcius...I think celcius is mainly done in Canada...

How much is 42 degrees celcius in faranhiet? That's how hot it has been here lately...sweating..:eek: Not as hot as last year, but still....very hot...:(

I don't know how to calculate it either--the only thing I know is that 32 degrees F is freezing, and 0 degrees C is freezing. It's only been around 50 degrees Farenheit here, and I don't consider that warm:rolleyes:

42 degrees C would be about 105-106 F. Its gets that hot in BC? :eek::eek::eek: Whenever we go, its only like 70 or 80 at the most in the summer. When my cousin from BC came to visit us last July, it was like 95 degrees and he said he would never want to live here because of the heat. :eek: We only go to Vancouver and Surrey though. Does it just happen to be hot in your city?

It was really hot here 2 days ago, but it seems to have cooled down a bit. We had the A/C on all day. ;) Primabella, do you have an A/C? If you do, perhaps Mickey would like that. We have central so the birds don't really notice it, but if we have the fan on on a really hot day, they just run to it and sit there all day. They LOVE the air! LOL

Edit: Hmmm.................I just checked the weeks forecast for Kelowna BC and its only in the 60s mostly, some days in the low 70s. :confused:

to calculate the difference you take the Celcius temp, multiply it by two and add 30.. so 30 celcius would be:

30+30=60; 60+30=90 Farenheit.

And to go the other way, you (obviously) reverse the process :)

That's odd, because my mom said that it was up to 42 ther other day :confused: Unless she just doesn't know how to use the thermometre or it's broken? lol...

I don't check the temp, my mom does, because by the time I get home it's already pretty cool out...I just got home, and it's 31 degrees, and it usually goes down pretty far from during the day, so it sounds right to me :confused:

Kelowna is called one of the more "tropical" cities in BC, because even though we are on a lake, we have some of the highest
temperatures. It got up to 46 degrees celcius last year, a record for every city in the Okanagan, even Oyama which at the time held the highest temperature record. It's supposed to get even hotter this year :( I'm guessing that the greenhouse effect has something to do with it, but I'm not too sure :confused:

Not as high as Creston though....yeesh, try going there...the last time I went to Creston, my friend and I took cold showers with our clothes on and slept with ice packs under our clothes lol :eek:

I'm in vancouver and it is definately NOT hot. It was actually sprinkling just a bit today and the last few days, it was pretty wet. It's rarely really hot in Vancouver, maybe just a few times in the summer but other than that vancouver is pretty damp and cool. My friends think I'm nuts cuz I LOVE the weather...iunno I think it's relaxing

It rains alot in Van, lol. My aunt has lived in Central Van, Burnaby, and Langley, and she's always complaining about the weather lol. :p
