Please Pray 4 My Little Kitty!

I am a very happy and proud new Mum! Unfortunately, my little kitty "Pixel" is in the animal shelter infirmary as we speak ...

I adopted my gorgeous kitty from a shelter last Sunday. I was going to bring one of my Mum's kitties up to Sunny Brisbane, but she could not let little Whiskey go and Milo was had become content after a long period of restlessness.

I rang the two pet shelters in Brisbane, getting no reply at the first and a very helpful lady at the second. I asked what cats/kittens are available and the first one she told me about was a little 12 week old Siamese/DSH cross. She described the little kitty as being a blue-point with beautiful blue eyes. I fell in love on the spot, having not even seen the little one yet and told her I'd be there in an hour.

When we first saw Pixel, she was asleep, but she came over to us straight away and tried to poke us through the wire. My partner, more of a dog person, also fell in love with her and we both decided that she was to be our new baby! I was very excited as I had not owned a cat for nearly 3 years (although I have lived in one cat household for some time)

I was a bit worried about the infection from the desexing tattoo in her ear, but the attendant said it was nothing to worry about. We took her home and would you believe she endured a 50 minute car trip without one cry of protest! In fact, she went to sleep. We enjoyed a wonderful 24 hours with our new loving kitty who had already taken to following me around like a puppy.

The next day, however, I noticed that something was wrong. I could not put my finger on it, but years of cat rearing has taught me to recognise an unwell kitty when I saw one. She was shaking in a very unconcerting way and was having some difficulty walking. We immediately packed her back into the car and drove her to the animal shelter infirmary. The vet was concerned with her temperature (extremely high) and the nasty infection in her ear!

My little darling has been in the infirmary since Monday and is not likely to be released until Sunday! She has been in considerable amounts of pain and has the abcess in her ear lanced daily.

I have been ringing them every day and we are going to visit her tomorrow, but I miss my beautiful baby and I am so afraid that she thinks she has been abandoned again.

It's not the best start in life, but as soon as she gets back she is going to be SPOILT beyond her wildest dreams! I have been hoping and praying that she can come home soon as I just know she'd be feeling very sad. The one thing that cheers me up is finding a great community like this!

Oh, that poor little baby! I hope she'll recover soon and you can soon take her home again, so she can realize she hasn't been abandoned again. She sounds like a great kitten with a sweet personality! Great that you can visit her in the shelter as long as she's sick!

I will glady keep Pixel in my prayers. Is the problem all associated with the tatoo?? I hope so. At least you know exactly what is causing the problem, that way. :( I'm sad for you and Pixel, but hopefully, this will pass, and you can get on with spoiling the new baby rotten!

Love the name, by the way. I have an internet friend who also has a Pixel kitty! She recently adopted her through the humane society. Her Pixel is positive for Feline Leukemia, and is an only kitty, showing no symptoms right now. So I have a special place in my heart for any cat named Pixel!!! :)0

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts! We'll be going to visit the little one this afternoon - it is unfortunate that the visiting hours during the week are 2-4 p.m. for those of us who are required to be at work! Of course, it is hard for the animal shelters as they are so understaffed, but my poor kitty must be feeling so lonely!

Today is a public holiday (thankfully) so we can go and see her. I have been "harrassing" the shelter every day as to her progress and the problem does seem to be confined to the infection in her ear. They thought she had the cat flu, but there has been no further evidence of that and her high temperature seems to be related to the ear infection. Thank God! I know what cat flu does to kittens, as we had a litter infected when I was a teenager.

As to her name, it is a very cute name, I agree! Chosen by my computer genius partner! Most people are puzzled by it, especially those who do not use the Internet much! She was also named after Pixel "the cat who could walk thorugh walls" from Heinlein's books.

I couldn't help but notice that someone else in Pet Talk has a cat named "Pixel," but I can't remember who it was.

Thanks everyone for all of your good wishes!

Hopefully the little one will be coming home tomorrow! We visited her on Friday and today and she was in great spirits. Her ear was looking much better also. She definitely recognised us even though we only had her for a day. She was so happy to see us, immediately she made a grab for us through the bars and was purring like a V8 engine! The vet said today that she may be allowed to come home, they want the infection to be totally cleared up by the time they let her come home.

The clever little mite even chewed out her stiches from her de-sexing operation! So that saves her yet another trip to the RSPCA to have them removed.

Smokey the elder: My partner got me onto Heinlein's books and I just love them even though I don't usually read much Sci-fi. His love of cats is evident throughout most of his novels. I adored the idea of a cat named Pixel even before we got her, and when we did get her I was willing to overlook the fact that she was a colour point (half Siamese)! Your Pixel is adorable! :D :D

I just now saw this thread. I sure hope that Pixel will recover soon and that she'll be able to come home with you very soon. All fingers and paws are crossed here. Please keep us updated.
